After doing a faecal egg count it turned out Matty needed treating for fluke, he wasn't impressed but I made up for it by giving him a digestive biscuit as a treat!

Just a reminder that egg count packs are available at Lewis Crofters Ltd or Ravenspoint Centre . Recent results from samples are showing that not all flocks of sheep are needing drenching and frequently horses are not needing treatment. Help prevent anthelmintic resistance!

When you collect a sample pack from Lewis Crofters Ltd or Ravenspoint Centre ( one per sample) you will also receive an envelope for returns. All the instructions are on the envelope and samples will be collected after midday on a Friday from Crofters or by arrangement for clients in S Lochs. Results will then be sent by email or phone call and hopefully will be mostly negative and no need for treatment. If treatment is needed however then Crofters will be able to advise and provide or you can speak to your vet for advice.

In mid January we will be offering a new service for livestock keepers on Lewis and Harris.

Faecal worm egg counts (FWEC) will allow you to understand the level and type of infestation and enable targeted drenching and treatment in your flock, herd or horse. Getting it right will reduce unnecessary treatment and costs, provide the right intervention for your stock and help to reduce the increasing likelihood of parasite resistance to current available treatments.

We will be specifically targeting screening for all common endoparasites including liver fluke.

Sampling can be animal specific or part of a larger flock or herd screening.

A FWEC can be a key part of your Animal Health and Welfare Pathway.

Screening will be provided by Izzy De Santis (RVN) Registered Veterinary Nurse from Croft Seventeen, Lemreway.

Izzy has worked in equine and large animal veterinary practices before moving to the Isle of Lewis, where she continues to offer equine support (Lewis and Harris Equine Care) and actively crofts with sheep and cattle.

We have arranged sample kit collection and drop off in town at Lewis Crofters. More details to follow in early January but please share and any queries please get in touch.
