Speed limit on the yard ๐Ÿ›‘

As displayed around the whole yard, we have a strict 5mph speed limit at all times. There is absolutely no exception to this. We have animals and children on site at all times, and we want it to be a safe place for everyone to enjoy

Failure to adhere to this will result in you being asked to not return to the centre - we have a zero tolerance policy on this

Thank you for understanding ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

๐Ÿ‚โœ‚๏ธ Why Horses Need Clipped at This Time of Year! โœ‚๏ธ๐Ÿ‚

As the colder months roll in, our horses start to grow thick, fluffy winter coats โ€” perfect for living out in the field, but not so great when theyโ€™re working hard in lessons! ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’ฆ

Clipping helps keep our horses comfortable, prevents them from overheating and sweating excessively during exercise, and makes it much easier to keep them clean and dry after work. Itโ€™s all about keeping them healthy, happy, and ready for winter training. โ„๏ธ

At Smithstone Equestrian Centre, we clip our hardworking lesson horses to make sure they stay in top condition throughout the season โ€” so they can keep giving their best in every lesson! ๐Ÿ’ชโค๏ธ

Why Teaching Kids to Ride Is the Best Job in the World ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’™
Can we take a moment to celebrate what makes teaching children so incredibly special?

There's something magical about watching a child connect with a horse for the first time. That wide-eyed wonder, the pure joy, the unfiltered excitement - it reminds us why we fell in love with horses in the first place.

What makes kids such amazing students:
โœจ Their enthusiasm is contagious
They don't show up jaded or overthinking as much as their adult counterparts. They show up EXCITED. Ready to learn. Ready to try. That energy fills the arena!

โœจ They have open hearts
Kids connect with horses on an emotional level that's beautiful to witness. They see horses as friends, not tools. That natural empathy is something we can build on.

โœจ They're fearless (in the best way)
Most kids don't come with the baggage of "what if?" They just want to TRY. That courage is inspiring!

โœจ Their love of ponies is pure
Watching a child's face light up when they see their lesson pony? That never gets old. Their affection is genuine and unconditional.

โœจ They celebrate the small wins
First time posting? BEST DAY EVER. Successfully steered around a barrel? TELL EVERYONE. They remind us that every milestone matters.

Our role as instructors:
Yes, we teach riding skills. But with kids, we're teaching so much more:
1. Safety first, always.
2. Building confidence in nervous riders.
3. Teaching life skills through horses
Responsibility. Patience. Empathy. Problem-solving. Resilience when things don't go perfect!

The incredible benefits kids gain from riding:
๐Ÿ’ช Physical development: Balance, coordination, core strength, body awareness, fine motor skills
๐Ÿง  Mental growth: Focus, following multi-step directions, spatial awareness, quick decision-making
โค๏ธ Emotional development: Confidence, managing fear, emotional regulation, pride in accomplishment
๐Ÿค Social skills: Taking turns, encouraging others, barn community, making friends who share their passion
๐ŸŒŸ Character building: Responsibility for another being, work ethic, patience, humility, perseverance
๐Ÿฆ‹ Therapeutic benefits: Outdoor time, connection with animals, stress relief, sensory input, joy!

The moments that make it all worth it for us riding instructors:
- The nervous kid who finally canters and can't stop grinning
- The child who rushes to hug their pony before they even say hi to you
- The kiddo who brings their pony a carrot "just because"
- Hearing "This is the best day of my life!" after a simple trail ride
- The quiet child who opens up while grooming
- Parents telling you riding has transformed their child's confidence

What kids teach US:
- To find joy in the simple things
- To celebrate effort, not just results
- That enthusiasm is a skill worth protecting
- That vulnerability and courage often look the same
- To see horses through fresh, wonder-filled eyes again

Teaching children isn't just about creating riders. It's about creating confident, compassionate, responsible humans who learn that hard work pays off, that animals deserve respect, and that they're capable of more than they thought.
Some will ride forever. Some will move on to other passions. But the lessons they learn in the barn? Those stay with them for life.

Teaching kids keeps US young, inspired, and connected to why we love this. Their joy is our joy. Their progress is our pride. Their love of horses reignites our own passion.

To all the kids in our programs: Thank you for reminding us why this work matters. ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฉต

โ„๏ธ Winter at Smithstone Equestrian Centre ๐Ÿด๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ

As the darker nights and colder weather roll in, things start to look a little different around the yard โ€” for both our horses and our riders!

๐Ÿ‚ Horses Coming In: Many of our horses and ponies will begin spending more time indoors to stay warm and dry. Youโ€™ll still see plenty of them out and about, but cosy stables and extra hay become part of their daily routine.

๐Ÿฅ• Feeding & Care: With less grass in the fields, our team carefully adjusts feed and hay to keep every horse healthy, happy, and full of energy for lessons.

๐Ÿงฃ Winter Coats & Rugging: The fluff is back! Horses grow thicker coats and some are rugged to help them stay snug through the cold months. The clippers come out and nearly all of our horses receive a tailored haircut dependant on their workload. Our horses are rugged dependant on type, clip, routine and condition.

๐Ÿ‡ Lesson Adjustments: You might notice a few small changes to lesson times, activities and formats as we work around daylight hours and weather. Donโ€™t worry โ€” thereโ€™ll still be plenty of riding, learning, and fun! Weโ€™ll focus on everything from flatwork and pole exercises indoors to horse care and management sessions when conditions call for it. With a change in routine, comes a change in behaviour. Our experienced team work hard to monitor and adapt things as and when required, but please bare with us as we transition in to winter.

At Smithstone, winter is all about keeping both horses and riders thriving โ€” come rain, frost, or snow, we will still be here! ๐Ÿ’™โ„๏ธ
