Stand down people, it's just duckweed!!!

Following further investigation we've confirmed that the green layer on Hanley Park lake is duckweed, not blue-green algae.

Duckweed is harmless to people and pets but has covered the entire lake - making it look like grass.

This could be confusing for dogs and children who may mistake the lake surface for grass so please remember not to enter the water.

Blue algae is a dog killer. Don't let your dogs drink or bathe in the water

We've detected blue-green algae in the lake at Hanley Park.

This can be harmful to both people and pets - it may cause skin rashes and serious illness if swallowed.

Please keep dogs on leads and avoid contact with the water while we treat the issue.

So important to remember.

When will people stop taking risks? Temperatures as low as 20'c can pose a risk to some dogs in this country. The risk is heat stroke which can kill in minutes! Dogs can not cool themselves by panting if the air around them is too warm. Infact if they are panting in a warm environment they will actually increase their temperature. I saw dogs out walking with their owners yesterday at lunchtime. One was a wooly coated dog, tongue hanging out- their owner had a cool summer dress on. Why take the risk?
The temperature is set to rise over the next few days. If you have an appointment, please don't walk to us, instead use your car and only if you have air conditioning. The grooming studio is fully air conditioned for your dogs safety.

With temperatures set to be high this week, please remember, there is no safe amount of time to leave dogs alone in a car during the hot weather – even a few minutes could prove to be fatal β˜€οΈπŸš— Keep your pooches safe, cool and hydrated in the heat!
