Thank you to everyone who ordered Nature's Boost. The ingredients & labels arrived yesterday, and it is being made and bagged up this weekend. Delivery will start on Monday.
It may require a name change at some point, as I didn't realise the word "Boost" was on the forbidden list and I`d already ordered the labels. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ˜†

It`s pumpkin season. πŸŽƒ
They are everywhere, and the cheapest they`ll be all year. This one was Β£1.85 from the local farm shop.
So, it is the perfect time to make pumpkin puree for your dog and store some in the freezer for the dodgy tummy kind of days or when they need a bit more fibre in their diet.
They contain both soluble & insoluble fibre, so they are good for managing either diarrhoea or constipation.

Now is the time to harvest and dry any herbs you want to preserve for the winter months. Calendula petals are easy to dry and a nice splash of colour for the darker dreary months ahead.
These dry petals are going into butter, but I'll also dry some to sprinkle on the dog's food and to add to a immune boosting tea with elderberry that I make each year.

This is probably the last weekend for picking blackberries before Michelmas Day. In folk lore, it is believed that the Devil was thrown out of heaven on this day and landed in a blackberry bush. He was so furious that he spat on all the berries and scorched the leaves.
You'll now start to see the brambles looking very sad and any fruit left is in inedible. So it's the last chance if you spot any plump healthy berries before 29th September.

The fascia is highly sensitive and constantly reports information to the brain about movement, bodily position, posture, tension, stress, and pain. It holds past trauma, poor posture, and the stresses of our lifetime. Nurture it with slow, purposeful movement, slowing down the breath, relaxation techniques, and self-compassion πŸ₯°

I am currently working on a membership for the website. There will be a founding member special offer and a gold membership for those wanting to take a deeper dive into holistic dog care.
I will be covering all things natural dog care and also doing much more on the enrichment garden, but as my followers know, I am passionate about the countryside, foraging, and also natural health care for us, too. Would you prefer it to be purely about dogs or cover other nature-related and self-care topics too?

This is the perfect month for foraging and harvesting herbs and vegetables from the garden.
We are able to preserve all these wonderful gifts from nature through freezing, fermenting, drying, blending into butter, and marinating in oil.
I am making veg and berry smoothies this week for the dogs and freezing them for the winter months.

I felt I needed to post this due to the absolute barrage of cheap and nasty joint supplements flooding the internet by companies that have no knowledge about the arthritic dog and are driven by Β£s.
They have, of course, made full use of AI, showing joints surrounded by flames, bone-on-bone diagrams, dogs falling on slippery floors, and dragging their back legs behind them.
Some of these supplements, mostly of the soft chew type, have been formulated by "real vets," apparently, and have reversed arthritis and hip dysplasia where other treatments have failed. And the arthritic dog has returned to walking for hours, chasing a ball, and jumping out of the car once again!

If only it were that simple!

While quality joint supplements can be beneficial (and I use them with my own dogs) for managing an arthritic dog, the absolute essentials are even more important and need to be put in place alongside them.
It is not just the joint that is affected, as these companies will mislead you into thinking. It is every system in the dog's body that compensates for pain and loss of mobility, and a cheap supplement; however, much has been spent on promoting it, will not benefit your dog's joints, particularly arthritic ones.

A top-quality joint supplement should be the building block, and often, people will only start using it when the dog is really struggling & has many adaptations in movement and muscle atrophy by then.
Using it as a "joint food" to nourish the joints and help lessen inflammation & wear and tear, particularly with an active dog, or those breeds prone to hereditary joint issues, or perhaps after a known injury.
But it is vital to make lifestyle changes, including non-negotiable anti-slip floors, dietary improvement, appropriate exercise, keeping them slim as body fat is inflammatory, enrichment, hydro & complementary therapies such as acupuncture and massage, adequate rest on a supportive bed & limiting concussion from jumping down out of cars & ball chasing.
And yes, often pain relief meds are needed, sometimes short-term or long-term management. A dog in pain doesn't want to move and that will compound the mobility & muscle weakness further. All these lifestyle changes will mean that pain relief can be kept to a minimum for much longer.
If you see these adverts making ridiculous claims, then please call them out. We are the voice for the dogs, after all.
Sunday rant over, but it does get on my wick !πŸ˜†

For the Love of Dogs

I have been a sports, remedial and holistic therapist treating human, equine and canine patients since 2001. I have a lifelong obsession with dogs, a deep love of nature and a passion for herbs.

I hope this love shines through in the unique herbal blends, whether that is the organic blends that embrace seasonality or those that target specific needs such as stress, tummy issues, assistance in repelling fleas & ticks or support for our beloved seniors.

After observing the behaviour of my own dogs, who were free to roam over a large area of organic farmland, it became clear just how important and enjoyable foraging seemed to be to them. They would graze on grasses and herbs and at certain times of the year eat berries and occasionally dig up roots to chew on. Wanting all dogs to benefit from the bounty that nature has to offer and the gifts that each season brings, Hedgerow Hounds was born.

Our herbal blends are veterinary approved and a simple way to add nutrition and variation to the diet in a form that the body can easily utilise. We hand make the blends in small batches using nutritional herbs, vegetables, berries, roots and seeds, some of which dogs will often forage for if they have the opportunity. The blends are really versatile and can be served dry, re-hydrated or offered as a tea. They are also perfect for adding to any recipes or treats that you make for your dog.
