Meet Tony! *** edited to add because some people seem to be getting quite confused… Tony, who is a 13.1hh cob and in his currently, portly state, weighs in the region of 450kg…***

He's in a new home and his owner asked us to to give him a refresher on driving, which he has done before, and to check for any issues. Although he has clearly been driven before and things like traffic seem to be no trouble to him so far, we have found that he struggles with some of the basics - like standing still when asked... which is a rather important skill for any horse to have!

He also has some issues with driving in a straight line and with 'gear changes' when asked to move up or down a gait.

Watch to see what he's been doing and how he's doing now after some HDP training, as always, in a soft, flexible rubber bit!

You'll see on many of our films, a young student horse up alongside one of our schoolmasters. Our current main schoolmaster, Cloud, is a Friesian X Cob with just the right mix of temperament and build to make him an excellent horse for the job.

Autumn is a lovely mare we had in last year before she went home to mature over winter. And mature she did! She has come back with such a better mindset for work and learning and is making great progress alongside our schoolmaster, Cloud.

Our favourite one-eyed, Icelandic gelding is back at school to finish his driving training and polish up his ridden work! He has been away for the winter and come back with a great attitude for learning, but does having one eye affect him or our training methods with him?

Tomorrow's the big day! We'll report back on how that goes of course, but for now watch Harvey and Lenny's trip into town with the dray they'll be pulling for their owners' wedding.

They'll actually only be going a short distance on a village road for the "mane" event, but as Baz always says - you never know when you might come across a diversion and if we get rerouted through a 4 lane roundabout we want to be sure the boys are ready for it!

Experience Days at HDP - Coming Summer 2025!

We've had a lovely couple of weeks with our Experience Day folks recently - in all weathers, despite it being June!

We've had some people who have never driven before, some who have always wanted to and some familiar faces back in the passenger seat who it has been great to catch up with.

We can cater the day to your needs as much as possible. As they say, for people who like to drive fast we have fast horses, for people who like to drive slow we have slow horses and for people who have never driven a horse before, we have horses who have never been driven before either... Just kidding ;)

As we always put our horses first, we can't always run experience days. So if you are interested, send an email over to: [email protected] and get yourself on the list of people who will be contacted when we have availability and we will look forward to seeing you over the summer!

Who's been with us long enough to recognise these two?

Harvey was first with us nearly 7 years ago now and it's been 18 months since Lenny was here for training. They were put together as a pair, but as happens with life, they have been out of work for a while, especially as their owners are busy planning their wedding... Their wedding, not the horses'!

So the boys are back with us for some fitness and polishing, as they have a very special job to do. They will be transporting the bride and groom to and from the church and then going back and forth for all the guests!

See how they've come back to work - will they make the grade by mid-June?
