Fleas and Ticks – What Every Dog Owner Should Know

Fleas and ticks are common parasites that can cause discomfort, irritation, and health problems for dogs and their families. Understanding the risks and taking preventative action can help keep your pet healthy and your home pest-free.

Fleas
Fleas are tiny, wingless insects that feed on the blood of animals. Although small, they can cause significant problems.
Signs your dog may have fleas:
Excessive scratching, biting, or licking
Hair loss or irritated skin
Small black specks ("flea dirt") in the coat
Restlessness and discomfort
Problems caused by fleas:
Skin irritation and allergic reactions

Ticks
Ticks are blood-feeding parasites that attach themselves to animals when they pass through grass, woodland, or other outdoor environments.
Signs your dog may have a tick:
A small lump attached to the skin
Irritation around the bite area
Excessive scratching or licking
Occasionally lethargy or illness.
Why ticks are a concern:
They can remain attached for several days while feeding.
Tick bites can cause irritation and infection.
Some ticks can transmit diseases to both animals and people.
