You may find your vet recommends certain treatments to improve your pet’s health or to support their recovery after surgery.

There are also signs you can look for at home that could mean your pet would benefit from physiotherapy sessions. Please speak to your vet if you’ve noticed any of the following:

- Reluctance to go for a walk
- Changes in behaviour
- Struggling with stairs or steps
- Frequent stumbling
- Seems unsure jumping off furniture/in and out of the car
- Abnormal gait (limping, less movement of one/both hindlimbs)
- No longer lifting their leg to urinate

What can I do if my dog is in pain?

If you’ve noticed your pet is experiencing pain, knowing how to help can be tough. Whilst getting in touch with your vet is imperative to discovering the problem and getting treatment advice, when you’re at home you need to take extra care to reduce the risk of further discomfort occurring.

The number one thing you must do is ensure they’re comfortable. A comfy bed or section on the sofa with soft and cosy blankets for them to lie on will help with relaxation as much as possible. If they aren’t showing any signs of aggression, you can sit with them and gently stroke the areas that aren’t causing them pain whilst talking to them in a calm voice. If their temperament has changed, give them space and limit physical contact. Avoid any strenuous activities like walks or playing, and always listen to your vet’s advice when it comes to managing their problems.

Pain can have lasting effects that require help from rehabilitation specialists. Canine Physio would be happy to help your dog to get moving once again with the support of our fantastic team and equipment.

Neuromuscular stimulation is a treatment that sends electrical pulses to the nerves which then creates a muscular contraction.

It’s commonly used in animal patients that are paraplegic to assist in the role the nervous system would have normally played. It may be used to help develop or maintain muscle strength, encourage mobilisation within the tissues or help to trigger a response from the neurological system.

Owners are taught how to apply this treatment at home, so that it can be applied in between treatment sessions.

Some conditions don’t go away completely.

But they can be managed.

Physiotherapy plays an important role in supporting dogs with long-term conditions by:

• Reducing discomfort
• Maintaining mobility
• Slowing progression where possible
• Improving overall quality of life

Ongoing support can make a significant difference to how your dog feels day to day.

At Canine Physio, we’re here to support your pet over the long term, not just short-term recovery.

When a dog is in discomfort, it doesn’t just affect their body.

It can affect their confidence too.

You might notice:

• Hesitation on walks
• Avoiding certain movements
• Less enthusiasm for play

Physiotherapy can help rebuild strength and improve mobility, but it also helps your dog feel more confident in how they move.

Supporting both physical health and confidence is key to long-term wellbeing.

Sometimes the smallest changes are the easiest to miss.

A slight limp
Taking longer to get up
Not wanting to jump into the car

These can all be early signs of discomfort.

Dogs are very good at adapting, which means problems can go unnoticed until they become more serious.

Physiotherapy can help identify and treat issues early, keeping your dog comfortable and mobile for longer.

If you’ve noticed any changes, it’s worth getting them checked.
