For all vets! First aid for hedgehogs

Next Friday (17th January) I am giving a talk in Farnborough for local vets to help them become more familiar with hedgehogs and how to treat the casualties that arrive from members of the public. Hopefully this will mean more get the help they need and arrive at rescues having had initial triage, fluids, pain meds and warming as a minimum

Usually red or orange, however the amount of different colour and pattern variations may confuse people. Talking about corn snakes of course.
Their calm behaviour and good tolerance to handling made them very popular as pets around the world and make them also a good first snakes for people starting their adventure with reptiles.
You may find a lot of different information about them, I'd recommend using verified sources of information. Here below you can find a RSPCA manual with all necessary informations:
https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/other/cornsnake

From my vet perspective, I can add that corn snakes love to stay warm. When you bring your snake to the veterinary practice, make sure it will stay in its comfort temperature zone.
That can be achieved by having a hot water bottle, microwavable teddy bear or simply heat pad in the box.

Good luck!

Fly glue traps work well for flies, but not for birds.
This little adult robin was caught in one of the traps hanging outside the house. Despite the immediate help, he passed away. Small birds are very sensitive and do not handle stress well and this is the most likely reason for his death.
The average heart rate for a bird this size is 500 beats per minute (it depends on specimen, of course). The stress and adrenal stimulation caused by being trapped result in increased heart rate and hyperthermia, which in a short period of time can be fatal.
What is more, the glue is difficult to remove from feathers and requires strong chemicals to be used. As a result, the bird can become temporarily flightless.

Please keep fly traps inside the house and make sure no wildlife has access to them.

Veiled chameleons, known also as Yemen chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus) are arboreal reptiles that originated from the Arabian Peninsula. They are fascinating creatures, but can be challenging in captivity. Many of them suffer from illnesses caused by poor or inappropriate husbandry.
This female had a skin burn supposingly caused by the heat lamp placed too close to the branch where she was sitting. Reptiles are thought to experiance heat differently to mammals and as ectothermic (cold-blooded) animals may not know when direct heat is too hot. For that reason it is very important to create a safe distance between heat lamps and animals through lamp repositioning or placing them in lamp cages.

**Exotics vet at Ashworth Vets**
We are very excited to announce that from Monday 3rd June, Agata will be returning to Ashworth Vets every Monday as our exotics vet. 🤩
Agata graduated from University of Life Science in Lublin and moved to the United Kingdom to develop her clinical skills in the area of exotic and wildlife animal medicine, where she obtained postgraduate certificates and became RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Zoological Medicine.
Agata made her first steps as a veterinarian volunteering in Wild Bird rehabilitation Center in Poland, Marine and Aquatic Bird Center in Italy and International Bird Rescue Research Center in the United States.
Over the last few years, she was helping her exotic patients working in first opinion practices in Kent, followed by clinical work in exotic referral centre and finally became an independent practitioner settled in Hampshire.
She was always passionate about animals and fascinated in the avian world, so it is not uncommon to see her birdwatching with a pair of binoculars.
Agata will see any exotic pet and will be working every Monday from 9-6.30pm. Appointments are available by calling any of our branch surgeries but you will need to registered with us. She will be moving between branches each week to ensure access for all of our clients. Welcome back Agata 🤩🥳😍

This is a serious problem, that may affect our pet birds too. Bird flu, also called avian influenza is caused by influenza A virus. Bird flu has a zoonotic potential, which means can be transfer to human. The most recent case of avian influenza was confirmed in Hutton Cranswick, East Yorkshire where a 3km Protection Zone and 10km Surveillance Zone were put in place.

One of the most common trauma in tortoises are bite injuries. Very often this is causes by dogs, when animals are not supervised. The defense mechanism of the tortoise is to hide deep inside the shell, so predator cannot reach him. Shell is calficied and covered with keratin tissue, so injuries to it are painful simillary to bone fractures.
This little patient, 4 year old Herman tortoise was attacked by a dog and part of his shell was chewed off. He had to receive the course of antibiotic, pain relief medication and his wound had to be cleaned couple time daily. Although he was very lucky and no internal damaged was made, he will go thought the process of healing that may takes up to couple years.
This shell was repaired with veterinary epoxy putty to protect the gentle and exposed tissue from additional inujury.
