Boxers have them. So do Greyhounds, Black and Tan Coonhounds and Bloodhounds. The Japanese Akita has them too, and its breed standard calls for them: “Feet [that] are cat-like, thickly padded, round, well-knuckled and tight with a firm grip.”

Well-knuckled feet?

What on earth does that mean? The simplistic answer is that in a dog, it’s a foot that is the opposite of “flat footed.” The longer answer is that when the joints of the toes between the first and second, and the second and third bones (called phalange bones) are formed correctly, there’s a “bump,” or more properly, a protuberance that results in high, or well arched toes (as seen in the picture). It's evidence of good angulation in those phalanges (nearly 90 degrees).

Feet move a dog, of course, but they are also essentially “shock absorbers.” During movement (as the weight of the dog shifts forward), the ball of her foot becomes a fulcrum and her pasterns and toes become a lever. Poorly knuckled toes (or flat feet) lessen the angle of the fulcrum resulting in less lift. Flat feet will impact the dog’s efficiency and reduce her stamina. Feet matter!

I'd like to share this fascinating toe abnormality i came across on a colleagues dog last week. After researching i have found that this abnormality is common in some strains of cocker spaniel (although this was a terrier mix). The condition is called Brachydactyly meaning 'short digits'. This little dog had just one digit on both front feet which was underdeveloped.

I also groom cats 🐈 - for my sins!!

This morning has consisted of cutting 2 lovely cats nails. Cat nails don't always need to be clipped, but it can be beneficial for indoor cats, or elderly cats which struggle to keep their nails shorter naturally.

They differ to dog nails slightly in the way that they grow and are used, although do have a very similar structure.

Some of my favourite nails to clip are cat nails!

Please feel free to share experiences on nails clips in the comments below!

Let's talk about Westies...

West Highland White Terriers

When i first started grooming, if you could groom a westie, you could groom almost anything!
I remember sitting in a dentist chair and grooming one in my head start to finish to take my mind off it!
Interestingly, as many breeds do, Westies do come with their own little back story. This wonderful little fiesty breed descended from the cairn terrier. It was in fact Malcolms of Poltalloch in Argyllshire who developed a white strain of Cairns and selectively bred some of the first westies that we know today. As these dogs were bred for hunting vermin, badgers and even foxes, it has been said that the first white westies were bred to avoid the accidental mistaking them for the hunted wild animal.... wonder how many times this actually did happen to those poor Cairns. Enter the westie.

Coat type - Originally wire/harsh coated. Hand stripped in the show ring as pictured on the bottom. Westies as pets are often clipped. Most of the pet strains of this breed do not display the thick wire coat set by the breed standard, but either a sillier finish or a thick double coated feel with much shorter furnishings.

Good morning everyone!

I think it's about time to get this page back up and running
It has been a busy few years since my last post! (Madness).
What was a maternity break 6 years ago soon turned into me taking one of the biggest leaps in my dog grooming career, hence why this page was so quiet for so long.
I took the leap to dive back into teaching (yes I did this several years back). But in true Katie style i could not leave it there, I had to finish what I had started.

So! Off to an interview i toddled where I stood In front of a class of keen dog grooming students and demonstrated some of my best work (a bedlington to be precise) along with a microteach on dog grooming legislation! So I spread a little knowledge. Low and behold it landed me a job as a dog grooming lecturer.

Long story short the last few years I have turned my career up a notch and am now a fully qualified lecturer in animal care/dog grooming. 🙂 I am also now a qualified Internal quality assurer which enables me to be the sharpest I can be in my role.

Im hoping to use this page not only to bring you beautiful dog pictures, but to showcase my career, educate and generally just be a nice spot of the depths that is facebook!
