Did you know that the patterns on humpback whale tails are unique to each individual? Just like the spots of a whale shark, or the bellie markings of a manta ray, Humpback whales have patterns of black and white pigmentation and scars on the underside of their tails that can be used to identify individuals.

Their powerful tails (or flukes) can reach a whopping 5.5 metres wide and are used to propel them hundreds of kilometres across the ocean, and sometimes right out of the water!
