Devastating for another hydrotherapy centre to have to close their pool because of the bacteria being irrevocably brought in to their centre following a dog swimming in a local river.

🦠 Please, PLEASE ensure that your dog is thoroughly bathed after they have been swimming in any other water BEFORE coming into the centre 🦠

With the way small business has to be at the moment, any issues like this would just not be financially surmountable 😩

Rest assured that we test & treat our water multiple times a day as well as monthly external water tests so that any bacteria will be picked up on promptly. Hopefully that is enough to prevent this happening to us 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

We have been having problems with the pool for the last few months. Sadly, it has been inadvertently infected by a dog that has been in a river and the resultant bug (only found in rivers) has proved impossible to remove. It has been emptied twice and had a deep clean and the last time had chemicals put in it that were extra strong and we were told would cure the problem. Yesterday we could see that the problem was returning again after just a few weeks of reopening and the pool people have been here today to have another look at it. We can see today that it has also actually spread from where it started. We have been advised that it is now in the plastic of the pool and so we are left with no option but to shut the pool permanently. We are truly gutted but we have to always keep the welfare of the dogs in mind. The only option now is to have a new pool and there is no way we can afford that. So it is with great regret that I have to inform you that we can no longer continue to swim the dogs with immediate effect. Thank you to all of the clients that have used the pool over the years. We are very grateful to everyone

Great to see the benefits of Vet Physio exercise plans being discussed in The Times.

‼️ Remember, though, to always use a qualified professional for your dog's rehab‼️

A lot of people have jumped on the bandwagon and are giving home exercise prescription plans without the sufficient knowledge to be able to clinically reason why/when/how to use it, or more importantly when an exercise will be too much for your dog!!! If your dog isn't able to complete the exercise correctly, you will only strengthen dysfunction and then you end up with a whole heap of other issues to unravel!! Ridiculously, anyone can legally do a short online course, or even just regurgitate a programme given to them by someone else and start charging to give out "home exercise plans". With the rise in online courses since COVID, this is a problem I'm seeing more and more commonly 😩

Check your therapists credentials. Are they a member of one of the following?

🎂 My gorgeous girl Freer turned 16 on Thursday so I thought I'd do a quick post with a few tips for our Super seniors! ⭐

🚶🏼‍♀️Keep Moving – Gently!
Low-impact walks, hydrotherapy, and gentle physio can keep joints mobile and muscles strong without overdoing it.
Freer has shorter walks, a couple of times throughout the day rather than one long one.

⛔ 🏀 NO BALL THROWING!!! There is significant risk of injury associated with the sudden deceleration and movements of chasing a ball. This was the hardest thing with Freer as she absolutely LOVES playing with a ball. We roll the ball along suitable flooring now, and she still has just as much fun without overloading her arthritic joints. We sometimes also play hide and seek, so we get Freer to wait, hide the ball, then ask her to find it.

🧠 We utilise lots of brain games&scent work enrichment to keep her occupied so that she doesn't get bored with reduced walk durations. She regularly does her physio exercises and stretches which also keeps her brain active.

🏋🏼‍♀️Make exercises easy to do! I leave a selection of poles out so that when we go out to the garden, she steps over them - maintaining joint range of motion and muscle strength. More on this soon!

🏠 Home management is essential! Freer isn't allowed to rush down stairs and we have non slip matting on any slippery floor areas (oak floor, tiles, etc).

🚗 Freer is carried into and out of the car. Easy with a 9kg dog! Larger dogs may need a car ramp or steps to assist with their entry/exit.

🛏️ Freer has a choice of about 6 beds to choose from - much to my partner's dismay! Memory foam, donut beds, cooling mats, she chooses each at varying times.

⚖️ Maintain a healthy weight!! Studies have shown that losing just 6% of excess bodyweight can significantly reduce lameness associated with arthritis as it eases load and pressure on their joints.

💊 Don't be afraid of Veterinary Medicines! It's so important to find your dog's unique combination - work with your vet on this!

Today we got to meet the absolutely scrumptious Delilah!!

At just under 7 months old, fortunately Delilah has no injuries. However, her owner wanted to be proactive and come in for a puppy check prior to starting some agility training, as well as for some fun hydrotherapy sessions. We picked up some minor postural alterations that could potentially lead to abnormal loading and injury if not corrected, discussed home management and exercise tips for puppies, as well as signs to look out for that may indicate pain or fatigue.

Delilah was an absolute superstar, and has gone home with some puppy appropriate strengthening exercises, as well as a plan for some hydrotherapy to have fun and build water confidence, but also with a focus on strengthening some mildly weak areas. These integrated sessions are led by our highly qualified vet physios so you get the best of both worlds - a fully qualified vet physio and hydrotherapist in each and every session 💪🏼
