I don’t often get my phone out whilst I’m on a walk with dogs, the only two reasons being

1) check the tracker for a free spirit who has gone out of sight (the only free spirit I walk has now learnt to do 30 second check-ins since I am quite liberal with the ‘treat for coming back’)

2) take a photo of a dog or dogs who will stand/sit still long enough! Since it’s been bluebell time I’ve tried to get a few recently. The photos never do the bluebells justice but the dogs are of course wonderful.

So it’s been spectacularly wet, and I have to admit I’m very seriously hoping for a bit of a respite from the deluge! On my most common routes there are streams where there used to be paths, and despite having a porta shower in the boot of my car, the younger dogs (some of which seem to enjoy skidding into the bogs all around when chasing things) are almost impossible to get clean. Here is a little taster of the fact, that when it comes to going for a walk (gardens is different), dogs don’t care about the rain!

Having landed flat on my back twice last week (actually, once on my rucksack, thank you rucksack). I fully expected the ice to be completely gone by today, and yet some still lingers. Be careful out there folks!

Now that the rain has abated I can take photos on my walks again! This little ball-fixated charmer learned a new trick this week.

Near the end of our walk she started dropping the ball at the top of the bank of the stream in the woods so that it rolled straight back down into the water again. Not quite high enough up for me to pocket it, and apparently completely by accident!

🐾 Whoops! Got to run back down and get that, back in second! Oh no, look what I did, it went back in again! I’ll just go and grab it. Here we are…oh no! Not again, aren’t I a silly pooch! 🐾

Anyone would think I hadn’t thrown/kicked it for her over 200 times! 😂

So it’s proper muddy season now, and I’ve learned what these loops in the boot of my car are for. I’m sure they have another purpose (and do tell me! I love bit of midlife learning) but for me, they are for harnessing a dog whilst I wash the feet of another dog, since it takes quite a while to get the water flowing clear(ish). Totally worth it though to see them appreciate the joy of running in the mud!

So Ecclesall woods has been showing a wonderful variety of fungi these last couple of weeks. Couldn’t help but snap a few - dog treats in one hand, phone camera in the other! As you can see from the final photo - out of shot but still posing!

A potential client asked me the other where I walk dogs, and I realised that this may be a question many have. It can get dull walking the same route over and over, for me and for any canine companions I have, and so whilst Ecclesall Woods is a favourite of mine (quite a lot of route options) I also frequent Gillfield woods, Whirlowbrook Hall, Forge Dam and Blackamoor, and occasionally go further afield, to places like Longshaw or Graves Park. Dogs get some good varied sniffs, and my brain doesn’t turn to mush. Sheffield has so many gorgeous places!

Photos taken from a phone never do scenery justice, but I’m going to recommend a walk up to Rough Standhills viewing point on any day that the sun is shining. As you emerge from the woods on to the hilltop you are rewarded with an otherworldly vibe and glorious views for miles. I also spotted a deer between the saplings. Wonderful start to the day. Got Pepper a ‘dog sausage’ at the Shelter cafe too, most of which is now in my fridge, which was obviously just devastating for her.

Just a lovely moment of sunshine as I approached The Cricket Inn today. So tempted to stop for a bit!

So.. it’s officially Autumn, and although I got utterly soaked walking Pepper on Monday I can’t complain as we had a garden party on Sunday and it was gorgeous weather. Today I came prepared for muddy dogs. I’m not too precious about my car (likely an understatement) but if a dog shakes off just after I’ve clipped them into it, I prefer it if what they are shaking off is mostly water! This little lady accepted the foot wash with grace, which was a surprise!

So, we got back from our family holiday in Scotland and were reminded again just how much Pepper just loves the beach. I love Scottish beaches too, all dog walkers and coats (the odd horse). Despite usually being a bit of a fussy old lady, Pepper felt her puppy come back. It’s always nice to see your dog really loving life, even when the sand somehow manages to follow you over 300 miles home!
