Canine Conditioning is also great at reducing the chances of injury too. It helps to build muscle strength, encourages correct movement and therefore helps to support and protect joints.

Gundogs play a vital role in the success of a shoot day, undertaking physically demanding work often in challenging environments with varied terrain, and so it is that we should consider them as hard-working athletes. Over the lifetime of a gundog their body will come under considerable stress, whet...

Canine Conditioning isn’t just for sporting dogs. Any dog can do it, from our puppies to our golden oldies. Conditioning helps to build a strong bond between you and your dog, whilst helping to keep them fit and active throughout any stage in life.

Conditioning exercises are tailored to each individual pets needs based on their age, fitness level and activities. Whether your pampered pooch likes to carryout agility, flyball, go for long hikes or curl up on the sofa in front of the fire; there is an exercise program designed just for them.

With The Vets At Dronfield, I offer flexible 1:1 sessions. You can either book individual sessions at a time and schedule to suit you or you can make group bookings. All pets will be started off at foundation level, taking approximately 6 weeks to complete, and will advance through the stages at their own pace.

Today’s Top Tip for the run up to Bonfire Night is…

Create a safe space

🐶 crates make great safe spaces for times our dogs need a hideout
😸 cats like their safe space to be up high and if there is more than one cat in the home they like more than one entrance and exit to their hideout
🐾 pheromone diffusers need at least 24 hours to warm up so want plugging in well in advance
🐶 place the crate where your pet chooses to hide, so long as it is safe to do so, under the kitchen table is probably fine, behind the TV could cause problems
🐾 leave the crate door open so that they don’t feel trapped

Meet Cooper, his owner had previously carried out the 2 day foundation course with Emma but after undergoing abdominal surgery to remove a foreign body, Coopers owners came to me for a little help.

His muscles were nice and mostly even, but he had a saggy abdomen, a poor sit and his stance was not square (unless physically placed by his owner). Cooper was started on the foundation program again, to help build up his core strength and create new neural pathways encouraging him to use the correct muscles to stand, sit and move.

After just two weeks his sit had improved drastically, his stand was square and we had started to see elongation of the tightened muscles.

At 4 weeks we started tweaking the exercises and tailoring them to Cooper to meet his needs and start building strength in his muscles.

The last image shows him carrying out some ground pole work from the intermediate program, and he smashed it. Well done Cooper 🧡🐾

Albus has been practicing his back step onto a platform. This helps build hindlimb awareness, and is a stepping stone to a more effective conditioning exercise.

He’s not done this exercise for a while so we did a little refresher. It didn’t take him long to get back into the swing of things.

Meet Jade, she is an 11 years young, working Cocker Spaniel. Who takes part in flyball activities.

Jade came to see me after her owner noticed she was a little bit tight in her hamstrings after a race. This is quite common in flyball dogs, due to the repetitive high impact nature of the sport.

Jade also turns ‘red’ on the box, which means as she runs down the lane towards the box she turns right. Her assessment picked up that she can easily flex this way but really struggled when it came to turning left and if you look at the picture of Jade sitting you can see she has a very slight curve in her spine, in the direction that she turns on the box.

Jade’s owner has been given a number of exercises to help stretch her hamstrings, increase flexibility and build strength and muscle in her back legs. Jade is quite a busy little bee so I have given her owner a few tips on how to slow her down in order for her to do the exercises correctly.

I can’t wait to see how this little lady gets on. ❤️

This is Hilda. The first picture shows her in the middle of Flyball season at full fitness. The second picture shows her 6 weeks after giving birth to 7 gigantic labrador pups. We started the canine conditioning program with her, introducing a few exercises each week. Starting with some easy tailored exercises and building them up until she was doing a full foundation program.
She has just completed the 6 week canine conditioning program and is looking fantastic again. And has just started back full training with her Flyball team; coupled with conditioning exercises to build her muscles and keep them balanced, we expect her to be back to full strength in no time.
Well done Hilda 💞

Growth plate closure is such an important consideration when we are working our young dogs. This is a guide only, in my personal experience some growth plates can remain active until the dog is 2yrs old. Torque or twisting can cause damage to the growth plates. Find the distal radial epiphysis (wrist) this can remain active until 17 months or more ! Think about the concussive force this joint receives when the dog takes off and lands. Take care out there 😉
