75% of diabetic dogs develop cataracts within a year of diagnosis, and this was the case for Dexter, a senior diabetic miniature Schnauzer that had cataract surgery with us a few weeks ago.

Dexter was blind before surgery and his owners have worked hard, giving all the eye drops needed. This is what they have to say:

“Richard and his team are an excellent caring people, a credit to their profession and I’d recommend you all to anyone. Having 2 miniature schnauzers who are 13 & 12 we are well versed in using referral vets and of the 3 we have had to use over the years, South East Veterinary Referrals are without doubt the best!”

Dexter is just getting back to normal levels of exercise after quite strict rest, and this is a video of him enjoying some time on the beach.

We’re focusing on chronic nasal disease this week, and we have another interesting clinical case to share.

An 11-year-old male neutered British Shorthair with a history of previous severe destructive rhinitis that had led to marked turbinate destruction presented to us.

Subsequent chronic intermittent nasal discharge had developed, associated with recurrent infection and seeding from the region of inspissated pus within the frontal sinus.

We performed a rhinoscopy for sampling and more accurate culture results versus a nasal flush alone.

Culture revealed pure growth of a bacteria, Kocuria, which responded very well to a course of anti-inflammatories and antibiotics.

At the moment, we’re considering sinusotomy and lavage based on ongoing response.

This week, we’re talking about chronic nasal disease, and we’d like to discuss a clinical case.

A 13-year-old male neutered Bengal cross cat was referred to us presenting with chronic unilateral epistaxis.

We decided to perform a CT that revealed a large soft tissue mass causing turbinate destruction.

The large mass was further evaluated through rhinoscopy, which allowed for guided biopsies that confirmed nasal carcinoma.

Palliative management was elected for this case, and given knowledge of tumour type, NSAIDs were elected rather than steroids, since COX2 inhibition has been shown to be beneficial for a range of forms of carcinoma.

Meet Amy! 🙌

Amy has over seven years of experience in the animal industry and graduated from the University of Reading with a BSc in Animal Science. During her studies, she developed a strong interest in animal welfare and health, with a particular focus on canine science and behaviour.

Alongside her academic studies, Amy gained practical experience through roles in a kennel/cattery, a hydrotherapy centre, and a goat sanctuary. These opportunities gave her valuable experience working effectively in busy and sometimes challenging environments, while consistently maintaining high standards of care.

She has worked at Pennard Vets in Sevenoaks since 2024 and values the opportunity to provide compassionate care to both pets and their owners at every stage of their journey, particularly during sensitive situations.

Outside of work, Amy volunteers with The Cinnamon Trust, supporting elderly owners and their pets, and cares for her own Cocker Spaniel, Soda. She enjoys continually expanding her experience and knowledge within the animal care sector.
