At Paws & Reflect, our ethics, ethos and principles drive what we do; that's why right now, we can't stand back and watch, we have to get involved.

We have donated, and we are helping to spread the word about this campaign which could help to avoid one of the best vets we have ever known, losing the opportunity to support his community.

If you also care about the proper, ethical treatment of animals and their guardians, please take a moment to show your support for Adam Sheridan The Vet by sharing this campaign fire and wide, or, if you're able, donating whatever you can to help keep this wonderful human being in the position to do what he was born to do: care.

As so many of you have suggested it, lets see if we can do this, so I can get back to you all sooner.

Dog Training and Behaviour Modification

🖤🐾 Don’t suffer anymore. Don’t wait to begin your calmer, more confident life together. 🖤🐾

If walks feel stressful…
If your heart sinks every time another dog, person, bike or noise appears…
If you love your dog deeply but feel overwhelmed, embarrassed, or exhausted — you’re not alone.

Dog reactivity isn’t “bad behaviour.”
It’s big emotions spilling over. Barking, lunging, freezing, growling — often rooted in fear, anxiety, frustration or past experiences. And behind every reactive dog is an owner doing their absolute best.

At Paws & Reflect, I support both ends of the lead.

I help reactive dogs feel safer in their world and help owners regain confidence, clarity and hope, using positive, reward-based methods, backed by science and with your dog's welfare at the centre.

✨ January Special ✨
I’m offering FREE behaviour observations throughout January
(usually £95–£115)

This is a gentle, judgement-free chance to:
🐾 Understand why your dog is reacting
🐾 Be truly seen and supported
🐾 Take the first step towards calmer walks and a stronger bond

You don’t have to keep struggling.
You don’t have to “just cope.”

Change starts with understanding — and it can start now.

Reactive behaviour isn’t “bad behaviour”
It’s often a learned survival skill.

When a dog barks, lunges, growls, freezes, or shuts down, they’re not being naughty, dominant, or difficult. They’re responding in the best way they know how to something that feels overwhelming, scary, or unsafe.

Reactive behaviours develop because they work.
Your dog learns:
👉 “If I bark, the scary thing goes away.”
👉 “If I growl, I get space.”
👉 “If I react first, I stay safe.”

At Paws & Reflect, we understand that these behaviours come from emotion — not disobedience.

We don’t focus on suppressing reactions or “correcting” dogs for communicating. Instead, we help dogs learn new skills that allow them to cope more calmly with the complex world around them, while supporting you to understand what your dog is really telling you.

✨ January Offer ✨
To help more dogs get the support they need, we’re offering a FREE behaviour observation throughout January (usually £95–£115).

This gives you the chance to:
✔️ Gain clarity on why your dog behaves the way they do
✔️ Understand your dog’s triggers and stress signals
✔️ Explore kind, effective next steps tailored to your dog

📩 To book, comment or message “JANUARYPAWS” and we’ll be in touch.

Your dog isn’t giving you a hard time — they’re having a hard time.

With the right support, things can get easier.

🏡🐾 Your Puppy’s First Night at Home | A Calm Survival Plan

The first night is a huge transition for a puppy — new smells, new people, and separation from everything familiar. A calm, structured approach helps them feel safe and supported.

Here’s how to set your puppy up for the best possible first night:

1. Keep the evening quiet
Avoid visitors, overhandling, or overstimulation. Calm experiences support nervous system regulation.

2. Create a safe sleeping space
A crate or quiet bed area gives your puppy security and helps them settle. Place it near you initially to reduce anxiety. Is using a crate, cover three sides with a blanket to keep the space warm and help to create a sense of safety.

3. Establish a simple bedtime routine
Toilet → calm interaction → sleep. Predictability builds emotional safety.

4. Expect some unsettled behaviour
Whining or restlessness is normal. Respond calmly and consistently — reassurance without over excitement.

5. Support rest, not constant play
Puppies need a lot of sleep to process their day. Overtired puppies struggle more, not less.

6. Toilet breaks may be needed overnight
Keep them calm, brief, and boring. This supports learning without disruption. If there are accidents, don't make a fuss and definitely do not scold - this causes confusion, not learning.

7. Lead with patience and compassion
Your puppy isn’t being difficult — they’re adjusting. Calm guidance builds trust from day one.

A peaceful first night isn’t about perfection — it’s about safety, routine, and connection.

At Paws & Reflect, we focus on evidence-based, welfare-led guidance that supports both puppies and their humans.

🐾🏡 Welcoming a Puppy Into Your Home

Bringing a puppy home is a big transition — not just for you, but for them too. The foundation you set in the first few weeks can shape your dog’s confidence and wellbeing for life.

At Paws & Reflect, we encourage a calm, thoughtful approach rooted in routine, emotional safety, and science-backed training principles.

Our top tips for a smooth start:

• Create calm, predictable routines.
Puppies feel safest when they know what to expect. Regular feeding, sleep, and toilet schedules help reduce stress and support learning.

• Provide space to decompress.
A quiet area or crate allows puppies to rest and regulate their nervous system. Rest is just as important as play.

• Introduce the home gradually.
One space at a time prevents overwhelm and builds confidence.

• Support learning with positive reinforcement.
Reward-based training strengthens trust, motivation, and long-term behaviour outcomes.

• Normalise puppy behaviours.
Chewing, accidents, and disrupted sleep are developmentally appropriate — not signs of “bad behaviour”.

• Prioritise gentle socialisation.
Early, positive exposure to people, sounds, and environments (at your puppy’s pace) supports emotional resilience.

• Lead with patience and compassion.
Behaviour is communication. When puppies struggle, they need guidance — not punishment.

A calm home, consistent structure, and loving boundaries help puppies grow into secure, balanced dogs.

If you’d like support tailored to your puppy, we’re here to help. Just drop us a message via our socials or our website.

✨ There are no quick fixes when it comes to reactive behaviour — and anyone promising one isn’t being honest with you or fair to your dog.

Reactive behaviours are rooted in fear, stress, frustration, or past experiences. Suppressing them with harsh tools or aversive methods may look like a “solution,” but it often masks the problem rather than resolving it — at the cost of your dog’s emotional wellbeing.

🐾 Force-free, non-aversive, positive reward-based training works because it’s backed by science.
Research consistently shows that dogs learn more effectively, retain skills longer, and experience lower stress when training focuses on understanding, choice, and reinforcement rather than punishment. When dogs feel safe, they’re far more capable of change.

🏡 Real training often starts at home.
Your home environment is where habits form, emotions settle, and trust grows. Training here strengthens communication and builds a deeper bond between you and your dog — creating a foundation that carries into the outside world.

⏳ Progress takes patience and consistency.
Lasting behavioural change isn’t instant. It’s built through small, steady steps, clear guidance, and repetition. That patience is an investment in a calmer, more confident dog.

💛 At Paws & Reflect, we help you and your dog the right way.
With compassionate, evidence-based training tailored to your dog’s individual needs, we focus on welfare, understanding, and long-term success — not shortcuts.

Why choose Paws & Reflect?
Because your dog deserves kindness, not quick fixes.

With the Christmas period bringing changes to routine — and New Year’s Eve fireworks just around the corner — it’s completely normal for our dogs to feel a little unsettled right now.

You may still hear advice suggesting that comforting an anxious dog will “make it worse,” but for most dogs, reassurance from their most trusted human helps them feel safe and supported. Calm presence, soft voices, and gentle reassurance can play an important role in helping your dog regulate during stressful moments.

That said, reassurance should always be led by the dog. While some dogs find touch soothing, others may not want to be petted when they’re feeling overwhelmed. If your dog chooses to move away or seek space, respect that choice — giving them control is reassuring too.

Supporting your dog doesn’t mean forcing comfort. It means listening, observing, and responding to what they need in that moment.

If you're struggling to identify your dog's needs, we can help through our expert knowledge of canine behaviour - reach out when you're ready to take the first step towards a happier, calmer life with your dog. 🖤🐾

At Paws & Reflect, we advocate for our dogs by minimising their discomfort in any way we can.

Resident dog, DeeDee, hates the rain, which makes this time of year particularly unpleasant for her when she's out and about. When she's uncomfortable, her reactivity is heightened.

Solution?
🩷 Three-peaks waterproof coat.

Benefits?
🖤 100% waterproof cover for 90% of her body, meaning she's more comfortable and can therefore focus on her training.
🖤 Much less onerous drying routine when we arrive home meaning she can go straight to her safe place to relax after her walk.
🖤 She can pad about the streets and fields as a total fashion icon.

It's not spoiling your dog - it's meeting their individual needs.
