This week our dog of the week is one of the youngsters, Myrtle. She is a 3 year old working Labrador, bred on the Isle of Wight. She is trained to Gold in the Kennel Club Good Citizen Award. She is known as Hurtle-Myrtle as she approaches all aspects of life with speed and boundless enthusiasm. She has been tracker training for over a year, and takes off as soon as the command “find” is issued. She often cheats and watches the other dogs intently, then charges straight to the right item when it is her turn. She is Duchess’ house partner and is completely fixated on having a ball in her mouth to offer as a game or love gift.

Jane our trainer says, Myrtle has proved to be a very fast learner, she whizzed through her basic training, and jumped into the advanced group, and settled in like she had always been there.

She waits patiently for her turn, but that’s the only time she is patient, needless to say she lives up to her nickname, Hurtle-Myrtle. Her potting (taking of the target scent) is very discreet, she doesn’t linger, it’s almost questionable if she got it, but she starts off on a trail with her nose firmly down following the trail perfectly, she is also confident enough to lift her head if she is down wind of the hide, and will follow it in at great speed. She is working on her indications, which sometimes she’s in too much of a hurry to work again, to complete. Myrtle is a very sociable girl and up for game with anyone who will play with her after class, she doesn’t wait to be asked, and it is usually the big boys she is hammering around with.

Myrtle is not an operational dog yet, but is working hard towards it.
