The postman walks past.. your dog barks.. the postman disappears.
A motorbike goes by.. your dog barks.. the motorbike disappears.
A dog appears.. your dog barks.. you pull your dog away.

To your dog, it feels like their barking has made the threat go away, so they're more likely to do it again next time.

This is called reinforcement and understanding it is one of the biggest game-changers in dog training.

Instead of simply trying to stop the barking, ask yourself:

💭 What is my dog getting from this behaviour?

When you understand why your dog behaves the way they do, you can start teaching them a better alternative.

Meet Frank, a very handsome French Mastiff.

When Frank gets excited seeing friends through the car window, Frank barks.

👉 We call this 'excited barking'.

Barking, pulling, jumping up or ignoring you aren't the problem, they're a clue.

Every behaviour is driven by an emotion. Your dog could be feeling excited, worried, frustrated or overwhelmed.

Instead of asking, "How do I stop this behaviour?"

Try asking, "What is my dog trying to tell me?"

The more you understand your dog's emotions and body language, the easier it becomes to help them feel safe, calm and confident.

Behaviour is communication. Start there, and everything else becomes much clearer.

Our small, friendly training walks are a great way to build your dog training skills in a group setting.

Each walk has either a specific focus, this month’s is rocket recall!

With a maximum of 10 dogs per group, these relaxed 90 minute to two-hour sessions are designed to help you and your dog enjoy learning together in a supportive environment.
