What is better than playing fetch with your dog… this. I hide toys in fields working on impulse control and they have to use their brains and their noses to sniff out the toys.Why is this better than fetch? Well fetch will do well to exhaust your dog but it won’t fulfil your dogs needs like this will.

Why do I get my dog to jump on or over things we come across on our walks?…. Confidence building! This is the best way to build your dog’s confidence around objects/things they may find scary or unnerving in the outside world. It’s also a good way to get your dog to engage with you and is a good bonding exercise for owner and dog!

So I’ve been working with Hade for about 2 months now. He’s never had much impulse control and would usually take this stick or a toy right out of my hand if I was waving it near his face. We’ve made lots of progress in the last couple of weeks and he now has a good “leave it” command and much better impulse control. We still have a long way to go but loving his progress so far! (PS, I’m aware sticks aren’t great but he doesn’t chew them and we’re working our way up to his favourite toys)

I’ve been working on a few things with Hade over the last month when we’re on our walks. One issue Hade has is he will only engage with his owner if she has something of high value to get Hade’s attention ie, his ball or Kong toy. He also will not leave toys unless you can bribe him with something else that he finds high value. Today, we managed to get a lot more engagement from Hade AND I’ve taught him a leave it command. Being able to communicate with Hade on our walks has also helped his reactivity towards other dogs!

A short clip of Luna’s loose leash walking coming along very nicely. Luna can pull quite hard once she reaches the end of the lead, so we’ve been working on pressure and release. Of course Luna now knows she gets rewarded for walking closer to me so she often does this without prompting!
