Using a dummy or a non- rolling toy also works very well. They're great for working on impulse control and interacting between dog and person. Being more involved with your dog on your dog's walk makes you consider their experience. When your dog checks in, or calling your dog back, use tactile praise - a middle, a touch, treat the area, treat and do a short training game and redirect.
Best idea I've heard for ball throwers is to deliver treats to little dogs!

Always great to have tips and a refresh. Just a quick prompt with ideas is good fun!

🐾 Training Day – Building Focus 🐾

Today we’re working on something really important:
👉 Helping your dog choose to focus on YOU
This isn’t about calling them, cueing them, or nagging them, it’s about letting your dog learn that checking in with you is rewarding.

All you need is:
✔️ A clicker or marker word
✔️ Treats suitable for the environment
✔️ 5–10 minutes
If you think your dog might wander off, pop them on a lead to begin with and start somewhere easy.

🎯 Exercise 1: The Up & Down Game
1️⃣ With your dog in front of you, drop a treat on the floor
2️⃣ Let them eat it
3️⃣ When they naturally look back up at you, click/mark
4️⃣ Drop another treat and repeat

💡 At first, your dog might look at your hands or middle ,that’s normal.
To help:
Keep your hands behind your back
Avoid wearing a treat pouch if possible

We want your dog to learn that eye contact with your face is what earns the reward.
👉 Once your dog is confidently looking up, start to build a little duration by waiting 1–2 seconds before marking.

🎯 Exercise 2: The Ping Pong Game
1️⃣ With your dog in front of you, throw a treat to one side
2️⃣ Let them move out to get it
3️⃣ When they return and look at you , click/mark
4️⃣ Throw the next treat to the other side
5️⃣ Repeat, going side to side
This teaches your dog that moving away is fine but coming back and focusing on you is brilliant
✨ Important Tips
✔️ Keep sessions short, 6–10 treats at a time
✔️ Let your dog choose to refocus
❌ Don’t call your dog to prompt attention
✔️ Build this in easy environments first
Once your dog is confident, you can gradually practise in more distracting places.
If they struggle, simply drop back to an easier setup and rebuild.

👇 Drop your videos or updates below and show us how you’re getting on!

ℹ️ A Quick Note on These Exercises
These focus exercises are based on Leslie McDevitt’s Pattern Games from Control Unleashed.
Pattern games help dogs:
✔️ Predict what’s coming next
✔️ Feel calmer and more confident
✔️ Choose to reengage with their handler
✔️ Work around distractions more easily
They’re a brilliant foundation for building focus in a way that feels safe, structured, and rewarding for the dog.

Whoop whoop! Brilliant news 👏 😀 🐾🎉

People dressed in costumes and unexpected knocks at the door can be
confusing and scary for many dogs. Here are our Halloween top tips:
🎃 Be careful when opening the door so your dog doesn’t accidentally
escape
👻 If your dog is really worried, consider a sign saying ‘nervous dog,
please do not knock’. You could still leave treats out for children to
help themselves
🍬 Keep human sweets and chocolate safely out of your dog’s reach
🧛 Keep dressing up for humans only. Costumes can feel restrictive
and prevent your pet from communicating their discomfort

As is the case with countless dog walking volunteers around the nation, Monica fell in love with Holly after her very first walk with her. As the weeks went by, Holly's owner's health sadly declined and Monica was supporting the pair more and more. Monica and Holly grew closer by the day, and soon this love and trust would be an invaluable part in making the challenging transition into a new home smooth for Holly. Holly's owner passed away, and it was clear to everyone that there was only one place for her to spend her twilight years, and that is with her beloved walker and new foster mum, Monica. 🏡🥰

Sometimes things are just meant to be, and Monica coming into Holly's life when she did, is the perfect example of that! Since then, Monica and her husband have shared 6 years of unrelenting love with dear Holly. Nothing was ever too much for them, Holly developed diabetes in recent years, requiring twice daily injections and careful monitoring. All of this was taken in stride, and Holly's bold character never wavered. She enjoyed her walks, trips to the beach, and the love and cuddles of her family until she went to sleep for the final time last month.

We send our love and gratitude to Monica and her husband for providing Holly the perfect home and a fulfilled and compassion filled final chapter. You will be missed Holly, we send our love to you, over the rainbow bridge. 💙🌈

Thinking about buying a poodle? Have you been told they "don't need grooming until 1yrs old" or "coat maintenance is easy"?

*PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING piece written by a groomer..in the pic that's known as a pelted coat /Pelting. A dog’s fur gets so matted & tangled it will come off in one piece. It's outs tension on the skin, can damage the skin causing horrible infections and sometimes renders the dog helpless, unable to move and it can then cause fatality

-------->

Poodle crosses (cockapoos, doodles, maltipoos etc.) are not "easy breeds" to maintain. The photo attached (shared from another groomer) shows how matting forms at the skin. By looking at this dog's top coat, you may not see the knots and you may not feel them as you would a knot on the ends of the fur but under that fluffy top layer this is going on. Once it starts its very difficult/ impossible to brush out... and even if you could it would be cruel to put the dog through it. Maintenance at home has to be more than a quick once over for these dogs if you want to keep them in that fluffy coat which was probably one of the reasons you chose a poodle cross in the first place. You really need to sit down with a brush and then a metal comb and make sure you can get it through the entire body at least 2 to 3 times a week.

I often feel like owners don't believe groomers when they say their dog has to be clipped very short. I always hear "I know he/she is matted, but leave as much as you can". You cannot clip through matting, you can only clip under it. As this photo shows, clipping under the matting means taking the coat back to the skin.

I promise you, your groomer really doesn't want to do this but they won't hurt your dog by putting it through dematting, they also don't want to hurt their reputation when the clients go around complaining about how the last groomer "scalped" their dog but there really is not any alternative. Instead of being angry with your groomer if they clip your dog very short please respect their commitment to do what is in your dog's best interest, accept responsibility for not having brushed your dog properly at home, and work with your groomer because, together, you can prevent this happening again. All groomers will be very happy to demonstrate a technique called line brushing which will help make your grooming at home more effective. Just ask! We all want owners to know how to do this

Poodle crosses are easily one of the highest maintenance dogs in reference to their coats. The combination of the soft coat they are mixing poodles with these days is a coat that is extremely prone to matting.

If you like a fluffy pup, you probably need to consider no more than 3-5 week intervals between grooming and set aside time for regular brushing AND combing at home.

Please know, if you bathe your poodle cross you really need to blow dry and brush out right after. Moisture, be it a bath, rain, swimming, snow etc are all going to make matting worse. If you know your dog is already matted-- bathing is only going to make it worse! Brush out before the bath.

Lastly "breeders" who say these dogs can't or shouldnt be clipped and not to give them a hair cut until they are one year old are misleading potential owners in order to sell$$$$ puppies and setting them up for a sad day when they finally take their pup to the groomer!!!

If this hasn't put you off buying one please schedule your puppy's first groom immediately after they've had their vaccinations and then be prepared to do the maintenance at home between regular professional grooms.
