Let’s try freework!

How to get started:

1. Choose a space where your dog can come and go freely.

2. Ideally have them ‘naked’ without any kit on (Benny hates having his harness on and off so we opted to keep it on to avoid the stress as much as possible!)

3. Put out items and textures that your dog is comfortable with, then as they practise, start to add new and interesting things they may not have seen before! Think of it like an easy obstacle course with different levels and textures.

Some initial ideas:

- a couple different surface types like matting, carpet, tarps, etc.

- Various levels like platforms, steps, upside-down boxes…Have a look in your recycling for ideas!

- enrichment items that involve licking, sniffing or tearing…like a lick mat, snuffle mat, etc.

- at least 2 water bowls

4. Scatter treats/kibble/paste and various textures of food around your freework items. Smearing it on the surfaces or placing it inside boxes and on top of different items. I like to make sure there is always some food freely available on the floor as well.

5. Now let your dog explore! It’s a good idea to record them so you can watch back and see how they prefer to move about the space. Did they go for the licking activities first? Did they prefer the harder to reach food over what was easily accessible?

6. Avoid the temptation to intervene! If they are done after a few seconds, have a think why…everything they do is useful information for us!

I don’t let puppies greet other dogs on lead…👀
UNLESS these 3 things are happening:🐾they approach calmly🐾The other dog is comfortable interacting🐾The greeting only lasts a few secondsIf greeting look like:❌puppy barks and/or pulls towards the other dog when they see them❌ jumping in the other dog’s face❌a wrestling match with maypole leads

Then you need to rethink on-lead greetings!

Puppies get excited and it’s ok!

Some tips to help:
⭐️Work at a distance first
⭐️Only greet when calm and have a loose lead
⭐️Teach puppy to move on quickly
⭐️Don’t say hi to every dog you see!

Happy training!
