Meet Chester. He is a lovely 4 year old welsh.

His owners came to me at a bit of a loss, a slightly feral horse who was scared of the world, he would prefer everyone to stay away from him, with the exception of an odd scratch. A head collar was out of the question and he was desperate for a foot trim and just general handling.

The aim with him was to firstly get a head-collar on him comfortably and stress free. Chester presented as an anxious horse who thought the world was out to get him. So the whole process had to be calm, consistent and making it all his idea. There was absolutely no intention of causing him any stress or discomfort, so patience was key!
After a few weeks of just sitting in the field with a headcollar and some food, he was allowing me to put it on him happily, he almost wanted to be caught when I showed up šŸ˜†.

After this, everything else was a lot less scary to him. We started picking feet up and out. This he cracked pretty quickly. He had his first foot trim, fly spray, rug on and the rest. All of which was very much on his terms but once that trust was gained, he was more comfortable being asked new questions. The whole process was only successful with his owners working on him when I wasn’t, this ensured when he moved on from me that he trusted everyone who might be handling him.

After a chunk of months with me working with him, he has now gone away to start the slow process of being backed.

Chester is the perfect representation of how rewarding my job is: the time spent with him paid off and his owners are over the moon with his progression. This is what I love about my job in one sentence, how rewarding it is!

It’s the small wins in my career that really highlight why I do what I do šŸ¤

After 7 months out of ridden work for my own mare ā€˜Gracie’ I finally get to sit behind her ears.

The last 3 of these 7 months have been spent testing my commitment, patience and dedication to my own horse. In this job it gets so easy to put my lot on hold due to being busy with all my wonderful client horses. I adore all the horses I work with, but it is a different type of feeling when you finally get past the bad into the good with your own.

Gracie has spent three months in intensive rehab from general soreness and saddle fitting problems. She is a typical Irish horse where she changes shape constantly and is very particular about the type of saddle that works with her shape.
These previous three months has consisted of raised walk poles, lunging, long lining, hill work and long slow distances.

Along side her chiro and saddle fitter we’re seeing some amazing results. She now has shoes back on, a saddle sorted and is cracking on with ridden work.

The rewarding feeling I get from working with these types of horses will never get old. Whether it’s my own or clients.

Just a reminder, I am available for rehab work, bringing back into work and general strength building for your own horses.

Wow, it has been warm warm warm ā˜€ļø

This week has consisted of early starts, lots of hosing down, lots of fly spray, lots of dreaded yard jobs and hiding in airy stables during peak heat times.

Sloppy mash, electrolytes (cheap table salt) and hosing down is some of the great ways to help your horses in this heat.

Make sure yourself, your dogs and horses stay hydrated this week! Avoid the warmest parts of the days and enjoy the sunshine while it’s here!

I am forever grateful to my wonderful clients and potential customers who keep me busy and appreciate my work.
However, rant incoming, there are a minority of customers who come to us self employed freelancers and expect a lot for very little charge.
I have spoken to many other amazing people that do the same thing as me and they have also experienced many of the same experiences I have.

Unfortunately being self employed means our rates have to account for:
- the work we do
- the taxes we have to pay, not that are taken out of our wages
- the lack of benefits, no sick pay, no pto, no holiday, nothing that you would typically get when you are employed
- the insurance we have to pay for
- the risk we take with working with horses.

I say unfortunately as I, and the others that do the same, do what we do as we love the job, we love working outside, working with animals, doing our passion full time. If I didn’t have to charge people, I wouldn’t however I also, like the rest of you, need to be able to afford to live.
I really love my job, running my own business however it is hard work, no matter the weather we out, rain, ice the rest, and I genuinely enjoy it but when unfortunately we regularly deal with people trying to haggle prices, complain about how much we charge, complain about us having to charge mileage, cancelling last minute because they think they’ve found someone cheaper, it dampens the job down.
I spend a lot of my day in my car, that means I cover a lot of miles which costs money. We all work very hard every day and you pay for what you get, unfortunately I have personaly found those who don’t charge the going rates cut corners.
The going rate for freelancers in Cornwall is significantly less than what you would find up country, which may tell everyone we really are doing the job because we love it.

A really good comparison another person in this industry told me is that, if you go to get your hair cut, nails done ect and you pay for that service you don’t haggle with them or complain to them about their prices. So why should that happen to us? We care for your animals, we put ourselves at risk every day and people feel it is acceptable to complain, haggle and talk down on us as if we are not offering a service just like your local nail salon, hair salon ect.

Again, I love my job and I really appreciate all of my amazing clients, it’s just unfortunate there are some people who think that the way we are our living is negotiable.
