The Veterinary Medicines Directorate
IMPROVED ONLINE ADVERSE REACTION REPORTING SYSTEM LAUNCHED TODAY.

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) today announced the launch of the “new and improved” online system for reporting adverse reactions to medicines directly to them. This long-awaited action is excellent news for both dog owners and vets, and crucial to the integrity of the pharmacovigilance process in the UK.

Why is this important news?

To date many dog owners have been unaware that they can report any adverse reactions their dogs may have to medicines. As a result many adverse reactions go unreported affecting the recorded statistics essential to ensure drug safety.

Given these very valid concerns, and companies' known propensity to deny and downplay reports of adverse reactions (when made by vets and/or owners), it is much preferable to report directly to the veterinary medicines agencies. Reports can be made to both the company AND the agencies, but the agency report should be made in the first instance whenever possible. Care should be taken to ensure that what is reported is recorded verbatim (use your reference number to follow up on the correct recording and accuracy of the report), and that companies are not permitted to continue manipulating the pharmacovigilance data in this way.
