Did you know that based on recent studies 70% of dogs suffer from some form of anxiety? It is more common than we may realiseโฆ As their guardians, we should learn to recognise the signs, and understand options to help them feel better.

It is more than just a moment of fear. Your dog can be worried because of a specific thing, person, animal, noise, or a situation. They can also anticipate that something bad might happen (like you going away, or someone coming into the house). Some dogs can also be โhigh-strungโ in general, and are just worried about everyone and everything.

By being exposed to triggers our dogs experience repeated stress that can compile over time and can actually impact their physical health. Common issues span from digestion problems, skin issues, or inability to settle and sleep. Chronic anxiety can also weaken their overall immunity system.

โ
Observe your dog in daily situations and look for signs listed above.
โ
Understand which situations, people, animals or noises trigger their reaction (it may be useful to keep a log).
โ
Discuss your concerns with a vet who will be able to advise on next steps.
โ
You may need to seek out further support from a behaviourist or a trainer to work through a desensitisation programme.
If your dog is struggling, please know that you cannot make their fear worse or stronger by offering comfort (i.e. you can't 'reward' fear). Being kind to your dog when they are scared helps them feel safe and strengthens your bond. Together with a consistent routine and professional support, you can help them feel better.
