Very exciting to see this work on “separation anxiety” in horses now published 🥳🥳 A huge thank you to Claire, Daniel and all involved, it was a real honour and career milestone to be invited to participate on the expert panel. Looking forward to seeing what comes next from this important step forward in our understanding of this area of horse behaviour🐴

“In conclusion, this research highlights the importance of considering the contexts in the manifestation of separation anxiety in horses as it could arise in various situations. Indeed, we have identified eight different contexts of potential importance characterising when separation anxiety in horses may occur. These contexts range from stimuli that may act as predictors during ‘preparation’ for departure through the act of separation to the event involving ‘loss of contact’ and they are not only restricted to group-housed horses. Moreover, we identified multiple signs associated with separation anxiety, which may reflect components of emotion, such as changes in behavioural tendency and arousal ranging from an increase in arousal and tendencies like locomotor activity, hypervigilance, etc. to depressive responses like ‘apathy’ or ‘Total / Partial inhibition of maintenance behaviours’. Future work should be placed within the context of the eight contexts of separation anxiety identified in this paper, which are not mutually exclusive, to ensure unwarranted generalisations are not made in terms of clinical assessment or management.”

Just home from a fantastic day at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston who kindly and seamlessly hosted our hybrid event “Understanding Anxiety” - cannot thank them enough for facilitating such a great day and making my first experience of organising something of this scale feel so stress free! Massive thank you to Daniel Mills of course for being star of the show, informative, inspiring and entertaining in perhaps equal measures! And to Honour Smith and Francesca Guagliumi for providing support (practically and morally) both today and in the past few weeks! Feeling very grateful to be surrounded by such a wonderful community in this field - today was a shining example of this! 🥰

✨ Zella update! ✨

Very pleased to report that the behaviour exhibited in this photo did NOT feature in Zella’s vet visit today for her annual vaccination booster 💉

In fact, far from it, even under somewhat stressful circumstances, Louise and Zella smashed this hurdle with not only no “overt” response from Zella, but she even managed to do a little shoulder target for Louise in proximity to the vet AND although she stepped away a little when the vet approached, she then CHOSE to step back towards her and allowed the vet to inject the booster while standing still and showing no significant stress response! 🎉

This is huge for a little horse who has learnt a very effective BIG behaviour to avoid unpleasant situations, and learnt to skip all the more subtle steps and go straight there - especially with unfamiliar people. I think we should all give Louise a HUGE well done on achieving this with undertaking the training foundations we’ve been working on through the dark depths of winter these past few months - horse people, please show your appreciation as we all know how hard that is! 😆🥳

🌟 Zella update 🌟

A few clips from the lovely Louise and Zella’s recent follow-up session looking at different body part targets - would you believe Zella learnt each of these behaviours in just a few short sessions? As well as several other targets, which will be forming the foundation of some aspects of the longer term behaviour modification plan. She is a seriously smart cookie! 🤓

Working on these foundations while minimising stressors and avoiding situations Zella is likely to find too hard currently is really setting her up for future success, and I can’t wait to see what this pair can achieve together when we get to warmer weather and longer daylight hours! 🤩

I also just wanted to extend a big thank you to those who got in touch over the last month or so enquiring about sessions (and those who recommended my services!) - you are very much appreciated! For now I am fully booked for 2025, working together with an equine charity who I love being able to support again 🐴

However please do keep following for updates and future plans, I’ve got some ideas brewing to reach more people and their equine friends over the coming year! 💡🤩

This week has been pretty full on...

- Horse behaviour consult on Saturday
- Assisting with Lincoln Uni MSc CAB training practical and podcast recording with Daniel Mills on Monday (so excited about this!)
- Lecturing to the Lincoln Uni MSc CAB students on equine behaviour on Tuesday
- Supporting Francesca Guagliumi (veterinary colleague at Lincoln) with the delivery of a lunch and learn on situational behaviour medications to GP vets on Wednesday
- Consulting with Beverley Wilson (veterinary colleague at Lincoln) in the clinic on Thursday
- Travelling to and attending the ABK 'When Dogs Bite' conference with friends Kate Golding (of Companion Minds) and Honour Smith Friday - today

All while fostering some delightful cold/flu bug, Charlie having a hoof abscess (honestly do not know what I would do without you Louise Case!!) and the UK weather deciding to drop to below zero for the first time this winter 😅

But WOW what a week - I am so grateful to be able to describe a week like that, surrounded by frankly INCREDIBLE people and pushing myself personally and professionally while feeling so well supported and capable to do so. Thank you so much to all those mentioned, and everybody else who has made this all possible!

*To be clear for those who follow this page but may not be aware, I still work full time at the Lincoln Animal Behaviour Clinic (within university of Lincoln), but have recently restarted some limited equine services via this business!*
