🐾 Reliable recall doesn’t require fear, pain, or electric shocks. 🐾
A strong recall can be built using nothing more than a clear cue word, good timing, and consistent reward-based training.
The key is teaching the behaviour properly first, then proofing it gradually using the 3 D’s of dog training:
✅ Distance
✅ Duration
✅ Distraction
Using a long line allows dogs to learn safely while building reliability and confidence in real-world environments. We set the dog up to succeed, reinforce the behaviour we want, and gradually increase difficulty over time.
When recall is taught correctly, practised consistently, and properly proofed, it becomes as reliable and solid as possible without the need for punishment or aversive tools.
Unfortunately, some balanced trainers justify using e-collars by focusing on fear — saying the dog is “dangerous,” “can’t be trusted,” or will “end up being put down” without harsh methods.
But using fear and discomfort to force compliance isn’t better training. In many cases, it’s simply a shortcut that suppresses behaviour instead of truly teaching the dog.
Reward-based recall training creates dogs that WANT to come back to you because they trust you, enjoy working with you, and have learned that coming back is always worthwhile.
That creates a happier, more confident, and more reliable dog in the long term 🐾
