From the moment you meet Neil, one thing becomes clear — this is someone who pours passion into every part of life. A devoted dog trainer and qualified behaviourist, he’s the kind of professional who doesn’t just clock in and out — he lives and breathes his work, always learning, always growing, and always putting dogs and their families first.

With years of hands-on experience, Neil is known for a calm, compassionate approach, an incredible work ethic, and an innate ability to connect with even the most misunderstood dogs. Whether it’s working through behavioural challenges or offering support through tailored training, he’s there with empathy, skill, and patience.

But life isn’t just about work. A self-confessed foodie and gym-goer, Neil is also discovering a new love for golf, while still finding time to enjoy great films and take to the open road in his beloved camper van. If he’s not training pups or researching the latest in canine care, you’ll likely find him driving through nature with his wife and their dogs, or singing along at a live gig or being totally besotted with a live theatre production!

Behind the scenes, Neil is a carer — both in the literal and emotional sense. Married for 11 years to his wife but they have been together for 20, who’s undergone a liver transplant and currently waiting on a 2nd, he embodies loyalty, strength, and compassion. Their love story spans countries, with a magical wedding in Venice, Italy, and a shared life of resilience, humour, and devotion.

Their home is often a safe haven for stray animals in need of a second chance — a true reflection of the kindness at the heart of everything they do.

Now, Neil is opening his doors to welcome new clients — not just for dog training, but to become part of a wider work-family built on trust, care, and results.

If you’re looking for someone who blends professional skill with genuine heart, you’re in the right place.

Understanding Dog Reactivity: Causes, Effects, and Solutions

Dog reactivity is a term commonly used to describe a dog's intense reaction to certain stimuli, such as other dogs, people, or environmental factors.

These reactions can manifest in various ways, including barking, lunging, growling, or even attempting to flee. While these behaviours might seem aggressive, they are often rooted in fear and anxiety rather than malice.

Understanding dog reactivity is essential for pet owners and trainers alike, as it not only affects the dog's behaviour but also impacts their overall well-being and quality of life.

What Causes Dog Reactivity?

At the core of most reactive behaviours is fear. Dogs are instinctively wired to protect themselves, and when they perceive a threat—whether real or imagined—they may react defensively. This fear can stem from a range of experiences:

1. Lack of Socialization: Dogs that haven’t been adequately socialized during their critical developmental stages may be more likely to react fearfully to unfamiliar stimuli.

2. Negative Experiences: A traumatic encounter, such as being attacked by another dog or experiencing harsh training methods, can lead to lasting fear and reactivity.

3. Genetic Predisposition: Some breeds are more prone to anxiety and fear-based reactions, making them more susceptible to reactivity.

4. Environmental Factors: Changes in environment, loud noises, or chaotic situations can also trigger a reactive response in dogs that are already anxious.

Effects of Reactivity on Dogs

Reactivity can have several detrimental effects on a dog's life. A reactive dog may struggle with social interactions, both with other dogs and with people, leading to isolation and distress.

This can also create tension during walks, making outings stressful for both the dog and the owner. Moreover, the emotional toll of constantly feeling threatened can lead to chronic stress, which can have long-term health implications.

The effects are not just emotional; they can also complicate training and obedience. A dog that is reactive may find it difficult to learn basic commands or focus on their owner when overwhelmed by their triggers. This can lead to a cycle where the dog feels more anxious and reactive, perpetuating the behaviour.

The Power of Reward-Based Training

Fortunately, there are effective ways to help reactivity in dogs, and one of the most successful methods is reward-based training. This approach focuses on changing the dog's emotional response to their triggers rather than simply suppressing the behaviour.

Here’s how it works:

1. Desensitization: Gradually exposing the dog to their triggers at a distance where they feel safe can help them become accustomed to the stimulus without reacting. This process involves patience and careful observation of the dog's comfort levels.

2. Counter-Conditioning: This technique pairs the presence of a trigger with something positive, such as treats or praise. For example, if a dog reacts to another dog, rewarding them with treats when they see the other dog at a distance can help them associate the presence of that dog with something pleasant.

3. Building Confidence: Reward-based training helps build a dog's confidence. As they learn to manage their reactions and experience success, they become more secure and less fearful in situations that previously triggered anxiety.

4. Fostering a Positive Environment: Creating a calm and positive environment during training sessions can help reinforce desirable behaviours and reduce stress for both the dog and the owner.

Conclusion

Dog reactivity is a complex issue rooted in fear and anxiety that can significantly affect a dog's quality of life. However, with the right understanding and training approach, it is possible to help reactive dogs overcome their fears and learn to respond more calmly to their triggers. Reward-based training not only fosters a stronger bond between the dog and owner but also empowers dogs to navigate their world with confidence and ease. By investing time and effort into understanding and addressing reactivity, pet owners can contribute to their dog's emotional well-being and overall happiness.

Update:

Meg is a lovely Collie X who like to bark at everything, I was concerned that there may be a pain issue so the owner is going to the vets so we can rule pain out.

They are going to be working on clicker conditioning and some exercises to help Meg cope with her triggers.

Looking forward to my first training session in Prestatyn today.

Time to build a new client base, after having 6 great years of training in the High Peak.

Building slowly as Kim's transplant will be at some time this year, so don't want to stretch myself to much.

Further update on the dogs training later today.

Understanding Dog Reactivity: More Than Just “Bad Behaviour”

If you’ve ever walked a reactive dog, you know how tough it can be. The lunging, barking, growling—it can feel overwhelming, frustrating, even embarrassing. But here’s the thing: reactivity isn’t about being “bad” or “dominant.” It’s a response to stress, fear, frustration, or excitement.

Dogs react because they feel they have to, not because they want to. Maybe they’re scared of other dogs, anxious about strangers, or just over-threshold and unable to cope. The good news? With patience, training, and the right strategies, reactivity can be managed.

✨ What helps?

✅ Understanding their triggers

✅ Giving them space when they need it

✅ Teaching alternative behaviours

✅ Using positive reinforcement to build confidence

If you’re struggling with a reactive dog, you’re not alone. With the right support, progress is possible! 💙🐾
