🐾 Reliable recall doesn’t require fear, pain, or electric shocks. 🐾

A strong recall can be built using nothing more than a clear cue word, good timing, and consistent reward-based training.

The key is teaching the behaviour properly first, then proofing it gradually using the 3 D’s of dog training:

✅ Distance
✅ Duration
✅ Distraction

Using a long line allows dogs to learn safely while building reliability and confidence in real-world environments. We set the dog up to succeed, reinforce the behaviour we want, and gradually increase difficulty over time.

When recall is taught correctly, practised consistently, and properly proofed, it becomes as reliable and solid as possible without the need for punishment or aversive tools.

Unfortunately, some balanced trainers justify using e-collars by focusing on fear — saying the dog is “dangerous,” “can’t be trusted,” or will “end up being put down” without harsh methods.

But using fear and discomfort to force compliance isn’t better training. In many cases, it’s simply a shortcut that suppresses behaviour instead of truly teaching the dog.

Reward-based recall training creates dogs that WANT to come back to you because they trust you, enjoy working with you, and have learned that coming back is always worthwhile.

That creates a happier, more confident, and more reliable dog in the long term 🐾

🐾 “But harnesses make dogs pull...” 🐾

Junior, my large Mastiff, out enjoying a calm walk wearing a harness 👌

No prong collar.
No e-collar.
No harsh corrections.
No outdated “alpha” nonsense.

Just clear communication, reward-based training, consistency, and building engagement with the dog.

Tools don’t train dogs — people do.

A harness doesn’t automatically create pulling any more than a lead automatically creates loose lead walking. What matters is the training, the relationship, and teaching the dog what you actually want from them.

Far too many owners are told they need pain, discomfort, or punishment to control large powerful breeds. The reality is, with the right guidance, dogs can learn to walk calmly and focus without fear or intimidation.

Reward-based training creates dogs that WANT to work with you — not dogs that comply because they’re worried about what happens if they don’t.

Calm. Confident. Reliable. 🐾

It’s honestly hard to put into words just how big this moment is for Ruby & Daisy 🐾

For a long time, these two girls couldn’t safely be in the same room together without fighting. Living with littermate syndrome had created huge tension, stress, and conflict between them, making everyday life incredibly difficult for their owners.

There were no quick fixes.

Over the last 6 months, we’ve worked patiently through small, controlled, incremental training steps. Building calmness. Building trust. Managing emotions carefully and never rushing the process.

And now… Ruby & Daisy are starting to spend short periods of time together in the same room calmly 💛

To some people, that may sound small. But for these owners, it’s a massive step forward and something they once thought may never happen.

This is why reward-based training matters. Real behaviour change takes time, patience, understanding, and helping dogs feel safe — not fear, force, or intimidation.

I’m incredibly proud of both dogs and their owners for the consistency and dedication they’ve shown throughout this journey.

Progress isn’t always fast, but with the right support, incredible things can happen 🐾

🐾 Reactive dogs do not need punishment — they need understanding, guidance, and trust.

One of the biggest misconceptions in dog training is the old-fashioned “alpha” mindset. Unfortunately, many reactive dogs are still being subjected to harsh corrections, intimidation, lead yanks, shouting, or aversive tools in an attempt to “stop” the behaviour.

But shutting a dog down is not the same as training them.

When a dog stops reacting because they are scared, overwhelmed, or have learned that expressing themselves leads to punishment, this is often referred to as learned helplessness. The dog may appear “calm” on the surface, but internally they are often stressed, anxious, and emotionally shut down.

That isn’t a confident, happy dog.

Reward-based training focuses on changing how the dog feels emotionally, not simply suppressing behaviour. We build confidence, teach alternative behaviours, and help the dog feel safer and more relaxed around their triggers.

The result?

✅ Calmer walks
✅ Better focus around distractions
✅ More confidence
✅ A stronger bond between dog and owner
✅ Real, lasting behaviour change

Reactive dogs are not “bad dogs.” Most are struggling with fear, frustration, anxiety, or over-arousal. They deserve patience, clear guidance, and training that helps them succeed — not methods based on fear or intimidation.

With the right support, reactive dogs can make incredible progress.

When asking about the price of a dog trainer or behaviourist, it’s important to understand what you’re really paying for.

It’s not just the hour spent with you during the session.

There’s preparation beforehand — reviewing history, planning the session structure and exercises.
Then there’s the write-up afterwards — detailed reports, training plans and ongoing support.

Behind that, there are years of investment in education and experience. Qualifications, webinars, seminars, reading books, listening to podcasts and completing 40 hours of Continuous Professional Development every year to maintain accreditation with the IMDT.

In my case, that includes:

• 8 years full-time professional dog training
• 15 years total experience working with dogs
• Over 140 five-star reviews from clients I’ve supported

So when you’re quoted a price, it’s not just for that hour — it reflects years of learning, hands-on experience and continued professional development to give you and your dog the very best support possible.
