Teaching Barney in Preparation for Long Retrieves
The Scurry Dummies: South East Gundog Racing Team

Using a ladder retrieve setup, as demonstrated by his owner, Barney is learning to confidently travel out in a straight line to collect dummies at increasing distances.

This exercise helps build trust between dog and handler, encouraging Barney to take a direct line and maintain confidence when sent for retrieves that are well beyond his immediate sight.

Long retrieves are a common feature in gundog scurries and working tests, where dogs are expected to accurately retrieve dummies from significant distances while remaining responsive to their handler’s directions.

A great foundation exercise for developing confidence, trust, and straight-line retrieving skills. 🐾
