It's been a very busy few weeks in the coldwater department here at wharf getting ready for the new pond season.
We are packed to the brim with all pond related dry goods.
We have taken several deliveries of new fish over the last few weeks that are all now settled and ready for new homes.

"I want that one!" ๐Ÿซต

Did you see a fish amongst the group but wanted a closer look? ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ‘

No problem! We can soon ready the inspection bowl so that you can get up close and personal with your selections before making a purchase! ๐Ÿ’ท ๐Ÿซฒ

When you have decided on your chosen fish, weโ€™ll prepare it for its journey home ๐Ÿ

We will always ask how long it will take until youโ€™re going be back home, and then weโ€™ll pack your order accordingly. Typically, we double-bag fish, and weโ€™ll also cater for temperature and oxygen concerns โš ๏ธ

๐Ÿ“ข Attention! native fish in the house!! ๐Ÿ“ข

Green Tench โ€“ ๐˜›๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ข ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ข ๐ŸŸ

Tench are a firm-favourite amongst anglers ๐ŸŽฃ

Theyโ€™re prized for their beauty and the bend that they put into the rod, but they also have a place in our garden ponds ๐Ÿซถ

The ones we have here are around 6-8 in (15-20 cm), and despite arriving a little lean, they're now feeding well and putting on weight ๐Ÿ’ช

Theyโ€™re naturally a bottom-dwelling fish that feed down on the deck, however, theyโ€™ll soon come to realise that their owners feed from above, and this will undoubtedly result in surface feeding.

Here they are feeding on sinking sturgeon pellets, but with the above in mind, theyโ€™ll eagerly accept floating foods such as flake, pellets and sticks etc. โ€“ at least with floating foods, you can enjoy sightings of this fish ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ˜

Size wise you should cater for a fish with the potential to attain a size of around 18โ€“24 in (45โ€“60 cm) โœ๐Ÿฝ

We have good numbers of both the green and gold tench in stock right now โœ…

๐ŸŒž The sun has got his hat on! ๐Ÿ‘’

This pleasant weather soon makes us think about being in the garden...

An ice-cold beer ๐Ÿบ, a glass of bubbly ๐Ÿฅ‚, the smell of fresh-cut grass, flowers in bloom ๐ŸŒบ and sizzling sausages on the BBQ โ€“ yes please!

โ€ฆ and nothing compliments the above in the same way that a garden pond does: The sound of running water, sunlight glimmering on the ripples, the sight of your favourite fish, and pond plants in bloom attracting the bees & butterflies ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿฆ‹

OK, so we still have some cold nights ahead, but letโ€™s hang in there โ€“ sun cream and shades are just around the corner ๐ŸŒž ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Despite being a tad early in the season, it is still a great time to be considering your plants choices - which takes us onto the point of this post...

๐Ÿšจ POND PLANTS INCOMING! ๐Ÿšจ

We can confirm that weโ€™re expecting our first pond plant order of the season on Friday 27th March ๐Ÿชท๐ŸŒท๐Ÿชป๐ŸŒพ

๐Ÿ€ โ€˜RUDDy Nora!โ€™ - is duckweed getting you down? ๐Ÿ€

How about some natural control! ๐Ÿช„

We have a load of these delightful little fish in stock!

Sometimes a target species for freshwater anglers, and one that often poses the question, is it a roach or a rudd? ๐ŸŽฃ ๐Ÿค”

These fish are rudd, and although they havenโ€™t yet developed their beautiful colouration, one of the easier checks is the alignment of their dorsal fin in relation to ventral fins (the dorsal fin starts further back on rudd), with roach, the dorsal and ventral fins are much more aligned โœ…

Apart from the eventual lovely colouration, another draw to rudd is that theyโ€™re prized for their duckweed-eating tendencies. This is especially handy for people who prefer not to add lotions and potions into their ponds ๐Ÿซธ๐Ÿผ ๐Ÿงช

Aside from their affinity with duckweed, it wonโ€™t take much effort to get your rudd feeding flakes and pellets etc. They may nibble at plants though, so this is worth considering! ๐Ÿ€ ๐ŸŸ

When it comes to size, they have the potential to reach a size of around 18 in (45 cm), although a size of around half of this is far more typical.

So, what size pond do they require?

Theyโ€™re often good candidates for wildlife ponds, but the old saying of โ€˜the bigger the betterโ€™ applies here, and regardless of overall volume, we recommend a depth of several feet to assist with wintering โ€“ please ask a member of staff for further information. ๐Ÿฆ†

How many should you keep together?

Rudd are a peaceful and sociable species, therefore keeping them as a group will be appreciated by the fish โ€“ aim for half a dozen or more ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘

Fish health...

If you have a fishkeeping problem, we don't recommend that you simply add chemicals to your tank or pond without obtaining specialist advice. Diagnosing diseases or other problems in fish is not always easy, even for experts.

A frequently overlooked factor is water quality. This is responsible, both directly and indirectly, for many of the health problems encountered. There is little point in adding medications and other products if you are missing an underlying water quality issue. Here at Wharf Aquatics we carry out water testing for our customers and we can give advice on how to correct any water quality problems detected. We also sell a full range of test kits so that you can monitor the water quality in your tank or pond. Such tests are an essential first step in diagnosing many problems.

We can also carry out harmless "scrapes" on pond fish and certain other large fish, enabling us to carry out a FREE microscopic examination for parasites. If they are found, we can recommend the appropriate medication to treat them - rather than just handing you a bottle of medication in the hope that it might treat whatever your fish might be suffering from.

Often, the most obvious symptom, such as fungal or bacterial growths, may not be the real problem - these are often secondary infections, caused or aided by a water quality problem, parasite infection, or other stress factor. This is why we would prefer to discuss the nature of any problems you are having, rather than simply hand you a bottle of medication.

A few things to remember...

Please do not purchase fish for your tank or pond without ensuring the system is ready to accept the fish.

Stress is a major factor in fish health. Just like humans and other animals, fish suffer more health problems when subjected to stressful conditions. Stress factors for fish can include poor water quality, bullying by other fish, sudden changes in their environment, and so on.

Many medications can have side effects. This is particularly true if multiple medications are used, or if they are used in the wrong circumstances or on the wrong species. It is likely to do more harm than good to add lots of different medications to a tank or pond without knowing exactly what the problem is.

So, if you're unsure, please give us a call and we'll happily begin the diagnosis with a simple phone call, or pop in and see us. We are here to help!

Looking for a splash of yellow? ๐Ÿ’ฆ

There are some lovely fish in this batch but sadly, our recording device doesn't like picking up their true colour!

This fish is hardy, large growing and easier on the bank balance when compared to some of the Koi. These attributes probably owe to their popularity, but still, they are a lovely fish nonetheless ๐Ÿ˜

They can reach a size of several feet; therefore, it is imperative that they are destined for suitably sized ponds. Aim for a pond with a depth that exceeds 3-4 ft. and as many gallons as space allows - please ask a member of staff for further details.

Dietary requirements coincide with temperature and season. Donโ€™t worry about this too much, as weโ€™ll assist by having the correct food for the season, weighed out in 1kg bags within our main shop. Weโ€™ll also have bulk buys available on the shelves ๐Ÿ‘

So, if youโ€™re after a splash of yellow in your pond, pop down and have a look ๐Ÿ‘€

We are just a week away from the Spring equinox ๐ŸŒž ๐ŸŒฑ

This brings nicely to the subject of 'Spring Feeding' of our beloved pond fish.

In springtime when temperatures are beginning to rise, it is best to start feeding with a wheatgerm based food, which is easier for the fish to digest in cooler temperatures, as it normally has a lower protein content and more fibre / roughage. It is usually advised to feed wheatgerm foods when temperatures are still below 10 degrees C (50 F) - but do not feed if overnight frosts are likely โ„๏ธ

As temperatures increase into double figures (degrees C), you can start to introduce a staple pellet or stick by mixing some in with any remaining wheatgerm you have - it is better to transition the fish between different types of food in this way, rather than abruptly stopping one type and starting a different one ๐ŸŒก

It is advisable to start slowly with feeding, depending on the interest shown by the fish, so that food is not wasted. In addition, this allows the good bacteria in the filter to build back up after the winter months as the feeding (and hence waste levels) start to increase. This will be especially important in new ponds where the filter is not yet biologically mature โš ๏ธ
