Edited - new guidance.
π Hot weather information post π₯
Bit hot innit'??
Tomorrow (Monday) is supposed to be a scorcher.
Dogs and UK heat don't mix well, They arent used to it and it can cause serious health implications and in extreme cases, death
So, heres what we need to do.
π₯ Walk your dogs super early. Evening temps are still incredibly warm so if you go on an evening instead, it needs to be much later into the evening. Keep to shaded areas (usually, one side of the road is shadier than the other!)
The pavements get HOT and your dog doesnt wear shoes so always check the temps before taking your dogs out and be sure you're leaving enough time to travel home before they heat up.
If in doubt, just miss the walk completely - it won't harm them.
π₯ Dont leave your dog in the car in this weather, even if the air con has been on or the windows are open. Your car turns into an oven incredibly fast.
π₯ Dont leave your dog unsupervised sunbathing in the garden for long. Dogs can get sunburn too!
π₯ If you dont have cool floors anywhere at home, Use items like cool mats as a way for them to find some relief. Alternatively you can pop a couple of towels in the freezer and rotate them so you always have one available to use.
π₯ Make sure theres always fresh cool water available.
π₯΅ If your dog is showing signs of heatstroke. β¨οΈ
(heavy panting or laboured breathing, drooling excessively, bright red or dark gums, confusion, vomiting, unsteadiness, seizures)
Get your dog out of the sun and into a shaded, cool, well-ventilated area.
Try to cool them down, use cool, damp flannels placed in the armpits, groin and back areas. Do not cover your dog entirely in a wet towel as this can trap heat in.
Though last we heard, advice was not to submerge/cover dogs in cold water due to risk of shock, we're told the new guidance says this is now fine - though it appears not to be a one for all rule dependant on breed and size of the dog and your ability to hold the dog if submerging.
Call your vet for advice immediately.
Enjoy your bank holiday weekend. Be safe π
