Starting rehabilitation early after orthopedic surgery matters for several interconnected reasons:

Prevents muscle atrophy and loss of function
Muscle wasting begins within days of disuse. Early, controlled movement (even passive range-of-motion exercises before the patient is bearing weight) helps preserve muscle mass, joint mobility, and neuromuscular pathways that are much harder to rebuild once lost.

Reduces complications from immobility
Prolonged inactivity increases risks of:

• Joint stiffness and periarticular fibrosis (contractures)
• Cartilage degeneration from lack of loading
• Adhesions around the surgical site
• Compensatory strain on other limbs, which can lead to secondary injuries (a common issue in dogs favoring a repaired leg)

Promotes tissue healing
Controlled, appropriate loading stimulates collagen alignment and remodeling at the surgical site, supports circulation, and reduces edema — actually improving healing quality rather than interfering with it, when done at the right intensity for the healing stage.

Manages pain and swelling
Modalities like cryotherapy, gentle passive motion, and controlled activity help control inflammation and pain more effectively than strict cage rest alone.

Faster, more complete return to function
Patients who start rehab early typically regain limb use, strength, and gait quality faster, and are less likely to develop long-term compensatory gait abnormalities.

Psychological/behavioral benefits
Especially in dogs, extended crate rest can cause stress, frustration, or behavioral regression. Early, structured activity (short leash walks, gentle exercises) helps manage this.

The key caveat: “early” means appropriately timed and controlled for the specific procedure (TPLO, FHO, spinal surgery should each have different early-phase patient specific protocols) — it’s not the same as unrestricted activity. Early rehab is guided by the surgeon’s protocol and typically starts with passive/very low-impact exercises before progressing.

MYTH: "Putting a supportive brace or orthotic on my dog’s arthritic joint will make their muscles lazy and cause them to waste away completely."

✅ FACT: While old-school, rigid splints completely immobilised a limb, which did lead to muscle atrophy, modern custom canine orthotics do the exact opposite. They are specifically engineered to stabilise the unstable joint and reduce abnormal, painful loading without locking the joint down.

By taking the edge off the sharp mechanical pain, a custom brace actually gives a dog the confidence to use that limb correctly again. Instead of limping or holding the leg up, they can engage in controlled, functional walking. This active movement is exactly what maintains and builds healthy muscle mass, preventing the severe disuse atrophy that happens when a dog stops walking due to chronic pain.

Please read the advise o dogs and heat provided by

Heatstroke
Know the signs of heatstroke and contact a vet immediately if you spot them. Look for:

heavy panting
excessive drooling
lethargy
drowsiness
uncoordinated movements
collapsing
vomiting

Think very carefully before you take your dog on a walk this week. With a rare red heat warning being issued in parts of the UK, hot pavements and high temperatures can quickly put dogs at risk 💔

Please share this post to reach more dog owners.

Hold the back of your hand to the ground for several seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

Walk dogs during the coolest times of the day, such as early morning or late evening. On exceptionally hot days, it may be best to avoid walks altogether and instead focus on enrichment activities and keeping your dog cool and comfortable at home.

Myth: Glucosamine and chondroitin will rebuild a dog's worn-away joint cartilage.

The Fact: Unfortunately, once joint cartilage has degraded and worn away, a supplement cannot grow it back. Glucosamine and chondroitin are simply structural components of joint fluid and healthy cartilage. Rather than rebuilding tissue, they are intended to support the health of the remaining fluid and inhibit the enzymes that break cartilage down. Furthermore, clinical evidence for glucosamine on its own is remarkably weak; it generally needs to be paired with a proven anti-inflammatory (like Omega-3s) to be of any real use.

Summary: Extensive clinical reviews show that cartilage tissue cannot be biologically regenerated via oral supplementation, and data regarding visual or functional joint improvements from standalone glucosamine remain highly conflicting.
