Mental enrichment is a great way to occupy your dogs when it is really hot and is great for their mental health.

Stuffed frozen kongs and frozen licki mats will give them enrichment and keep them cool as well!

Greek yoghurt, banana, peanut butter, mashed vegetables, wet dog food are just some of the foods that can be used for this, either mixed or separately.

When the weather turns hot, we need to make sure our dogs have access to a cool area and water. Heatstroke is a serious condition in dogs.

Signs of heatstroke in a dog are;

Excessive panting
Foaming at the mouth
Bright red or pale gums
Drooling
Weakness
Vomiting
Confusion
Shaking
Diarrhoea
Seizurss
Collapse

If you do notice these signs in your dog you will need to call your vet for advice. In the mean time, put them in a cool airy room, gently pour water over their back, make sure that they have access to water and put a wet towel underneath them. (pdsa)

'Dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen'
(Orhan Pamuk)

Dogs communicate through body language, they tell us how they are feeling through their body. Some of these signs are very subtle and can easily be missed.

One common sign that they are feeling anxious is the tongue flick or lip lick, where they flick their tongue up their top lip or nose. If it happens once, it is not a problem, but if it continues, 2 or 3 times or more it can be a sign of anxiety.

These signs will always need to be taken in context, if the dog has a bit of food on their nose then it is probably not anxiety.

I would be happy to have a chat about these signs of anxiety, if you think your dog may be feeling anxious.

Dogs do like to predict what is going to happen to them. Sometimes we or the vet will need to examine different parts of their body to check for illness or injury.

We can help them to do this by routinely naming and touching the different parts.

For instance ... we could say 'ear' then thoroughly examine both ears inside and out, giving them lots of praise and a tasty treat.

We can use the same method with grooming tools such as brushes and nail clippers and also collars and harnesses.

For instance by saying 'brush' then just touching them with the brush, giving praise and a tasty treat.

Routinely doing this will them will help them to feel comfortable when you have to do it for real.

We dog owners have a huge effect on our dog's behaviour, sometimes even without realising.
Puppies naturally want to jump up on us, they want to get as close to us as possible, they are as excited to see us as we are to see them!

But... if we don't teach them that jumping up on people is not ok, they will continue to do it into adulthood, and then it is much harder to train out of them and even negative attention such as pushing them away is still attention to them.

We should be rewarding the behaviour we want on a regular basis. Teaching and rewarding a 'sit' instead of jumping up is an easy way to teach a puppy.

Getting the whole family involved in the training on a regular basis is really important for consistency.

A woman went to the supermarket and went around placing things into her trolley. She came to the isle with the cereals and started to look at the ingredients on the side of the boxes. She touched the box of cornflakes and then touched the box of Rice Krispies and down floated a ten pound note. She touched the box of Rice Krispies again and nothing happened.
The following week the woman went back to the supermarket and went back to the isle with the cereals. She tried touching all of the boxes, and when she touched the cornflakes box, this time a bell rang and a few seconds later a ten pound note came floating down. She touched the cornflakes again, a bell rang and a few seconds later a ten pound note came floating down. She continued to repeat this and the same thing happened everytime.

Bear with me....

So, when you're training your dog, you need to mark the exact second that they do the behaviour, with a word, such as 'good', as by the time you have put your hand in your treat bag or pocket to get the treat, the moment has gone and you may be inadvertently rewarding the wrong behaviour.
When your dog knows what they are being rewarded for, they will be more likely to repeat that behaviour.

Sometimes, when the weather is not so good, it might be cold, windy or raining, I think to myself, i'll just sit on the sofa today, my dogs won't miss a walk.

But..........they will absolutely miss their walk, they live for their walk, it is the highlight of their day!

Getting out and about with your dog is not only good for their physical and mental health, it is also good for yours!

So, next time I am trying to find an excuse not to walk my dogs, I'll think about how happy it makes them and I'll be up and out!

Barking at the window is a very common issue with dogs, especially since lockdown. Some dogs can find it really stressful when they see or hear people, cars, dogs or anything outside the window.

Barking can appear to the dog that they have moved the stressful thing away, therefore they will do it again and again. It can become an obsessive compulsive disorder and self rewarding.

Do you have a dog that constantly barks at the window?

Do you find it hard to get your dog to listen to you?

It could be because they aren't looking at you either. To have your dog focusing on you is a vital part of training them.

Looking at you can do several things.....

Your dog is more likely to listen to what you say.
Your dog will have focus and calm around distractions.
Your dog will have a stronger bond with you.
Your dog will look at you for more guidance.
Your dog will feel calm when they are unsure about something.

Focus on you, by your dog isn't something that just happens, it needs to be trained. Expecting it to just happen in a highly distracting environment is unrealistic and unfair on them.
The best place to start training your dog to focus on you is in your own home where there are less distractions.
If your dog doesn't listen to you when you call them back it is better not to keep calling them but to go and get them or to put them on a long lead until you have trained them.
Training recall in your home is not as complicated as you might think, there is a very simple way to start training this.

If you would like a free 15-minute chat about this training and how I can help you, don't hesitate to contact me.
