🍂🐶 Beware of Conkers this Autumn! 🍂

Conkers (horse chestnuts) might look fun to play with, but they can be toxic and dangerous for dogs.

⚠️ Risks include:
• Poisoning from toxins (aesculin)
• Severe vomiting & diarrhoea
• Drooling, abdominal pain
• Risk of choking or gut blockage if swallowed whole

👉 If you think your dog has eaten or chewed a conker, call us straight away for advice.

🐶☀️ Heat Stroke in Dogs: Know the Signs! ☀️🐶

With temperatures rising in Orpington, our furry friends are at risk of heat stroke — a life-threatening emergency that can happen in MINUTES.

🌡️ Early Signs:
🐶 Excessive panting: Even when not exercising.
🐶Drooling: May be excessive or thick.
🐶Restlessness or agitation: May be pacing or unable to settle.
🥵Bright red gums or tongue: Can also be pale or bluish in advanced cases.
❤️Increased heart rate

⚠️Advanced Signs:
😥Lethargy or weakness: Dog may be unusually tired or unable to stand.
🤢Vomiting or diarrhea: May contain blood.
🫨Confusion or disorientation: May seem dazed or unaware of surroundings.
⚡Seizures: In severe cases.
🚨Collapse or loss of consciousness: A medical emergency.

🚨 Grass Seeds & Dogs: A Painful Summer Combo! 🌾🐶

Did you know that grass seeds can easily find their way into your dog’s ears, paws, and even eyes during walks this time of year? These tiny seeds can cause serious discomfort, infections, and even require sedation to remove. 😥

👂 If your dog is:
• Shaking their head
• Scratching at their ear
• Yelping when touched
• Tilting their head constantly

…it could be a grass seed lodged in their ear.

✅ Check your dog after every walk, especially if you’ve been in long grass. And if you notice any of these signs, give us a call – we’re here to help.

Teddy's owners noticed that he is shaking his head after he came back from a walk and surprise, surprise - we found a grass seed in his left ear!

❤Valentines Day is this week but there are still things we need to think about with our pets to keep them happy and healthy.❤

As the low temperatures continue, gritting trucks have been out up and down the country, spreading tons of rock salt on the roads to melt the ice and snow.

There is a potentially deadly side effect for pets who accidentally consume this rock salt, by licking their fur or their feet after walking near gritted roads.

Poisoning Symptoms:
❄Vomiting
⚠Unusual sleepiness
❄Breathing difficulties
⚠Drinking a lot more water
❄Seizures
⚠Kidney damage

To prevent salt grit poisoning, you can:
❄Thoroughly wipe your dog's feet and fur after a walk
⚠Gently wash the affected areas
❄Dry your dog's fur completely with a towel after washing

Jet came to see us, presenting with vomiting and diarrhoea. X-rays were taken and a large foreign body was present.

Surgery was preformed and a large rock was removed from poor jet.

She is now on the mend and back to her self ❤️‍🩹
