I’m not trying to reinvent dog training.

Whether it’s a different scent search, a new layout at the field, an unexpected prop or a simple game with a slightly different twist, I like training to feel fun, fresh and interesting for the dogs, their guardians and me.

Novel doesn’t have to mean complicated. Sometimes it’s simply presenting a familiar skill in a new way and seeing the dog’s brain light up.

I won’t pretend fresh ideas always arrive on demand. Some days the creative department is closed and Bert is the only member of staff still willing to work, although his rates are becoming ridiculous!

But keeping training enjoyable is one of the things I love most about what I do. Not reinventing the wheel just occasionally rolling it through the scent shed, around the meadow and possibly over a few strategically placed treats.

What a way to finish of a Bank Holiday weekend.

I was asked by a group of friends from our Dover scent team if I would put an afternoon of fun on for them, I was hardly likely to say no!

We started with a few straw bale searches to give the dogs a nice fun warm up and then it was straight on to the next search zone, well it would not be a bank holiday without diversions and traffic!

We then had a little break and I then sprung the surprise on them!

I had been asked by Steph at The Tipsy Broomstick to help with a big problem, it seems that the bank holiday gremlins had been at work and hidden all the broomsticks so Auntie Steph could not open until they had all been found and everything was s***k and span. So who better then to send in the scent team.

The dogs went in one at a time and found all the broomsticks, cleared the area and then enjoyed the spoils of a puppuccino, it was well deserved and we even let the humans have some amazing coffee, it really is very good coffee.

Once rehydrated it was back down to the training field for a last fun game scent game....hide and seek, oh how I love being found by the dogs.

It was such a fun afternoon, not sure who left the field more tired me or the dogs.

It might not look like training. That’s rather the point.

Yesterday’s Life Skills class looked a little different. We divided the field into four zones where the dogs could problem solve and explore different surfaces, textures, heights, sounds and movement all at their own pace. Nobody was forced to do anything they were unsure about, choice is always part of the training.

Two of the dogs can be sensitive to certain noises and movement, yet they took it all in their stride. Another sometimes finds activities difficult around other dogs, but absolutely smashed it. Our more senior gent worked on gentle movement and cognitive skills, keeping both his body and brain ticking over without needing to keep pace with anyone else.

Naturally, scentwork appeared because apparently I’m now incapable of arranging a session without hiding something somewhere. We also included movement games before finishing with a relaxed walk around the meadow.

It may have looked like dogs exploring, sniffing and having fun(Which they were). In reality, they were building confidence, developing body awareness, solving problems and learning how to navigate the world around them.

Actually, perhaps the best training doesn’t always look like training at all.

Do we really need to be the Alpha?

Yes, dogs need boundaries. We all do. There are boundaries at home, at work and in everyday life.

But being the “Alpha”? Really?

Our dogs don’t need us to dominate them or constantly prove who’s in charge. They need us to be calm, consistent and clear. They need guidance, reassurance and boundaries that help them feel safe, not intimidation or a daily leadership contest.

Good training isn’t about winning a battle with your dog. It’s about building trust, teaching the skills they need and helping them make better choices.

Be their guardian, be their guide, be someone they can trust and rely on.

You don’t need to be the Alpha, you just need to be on their side.
