Some friendships never fade.. no matter how much time passes between conversations. True friends simply pick up where they left off, and my dear friend Selina R. Crutcher Artist is one of those very special people in my life. ❤️

After having to say goodbye to my beautiful Tom last Friday, Selina asked me to send her a photograph of him.

The photograph I sent was taken just shortly before Tom went over the rainbow bridge, which makes this even more emotional and precious to me.

Yesterday, Selina Crutcher sent me a picture of the portrait she has created of Tom, and it is now on its way to me in the post.

Honestly, I was completely overwhelmed when I saw it. Selina Crutcher has captured him so perfectly — his softness, his kindness, and his beautiful soul, this will become something I treasure forever.

Selina is an incredibly talented artist who creates stunning portraits of horses, dogs, and beloved pets.

Her artwork is filled with such warmth, feeling, and understanding of the animals she draws.

If you would love a special keepsake or cherished memory of your own beloved companion, I wholeheartedly recommend her beautiful work.

When a Horse Lets Go

A horse does not relax by accident.
Its body is built for alertness.
For flight.
For survival 🐎🤍

So when it exhales deeply beside you,
lets its neck soften,
and releases the tension it carries—
that is not rest.

That is surrender.

It is saying,
“For this moment, I do not need to be ready.”
“For this moment, I am safe.”

Trust like that is not loud.
It is profound.

𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀!!🎄🤶
I’m exhausted this year and haven’t sent cards, but you’re in my thoughts🩷. There's been so many changes, for me and my beloved horses over the last 18months.
So I'm sorry I havent been able to keep in touch with you all.
At present , It's basically trying to live from each day to the next tbh, and sometimes its incredibly lonely, when you've not your soul mate to chat too
, about the silliest of things, without feeling judged.
Tbh I've questioned existince ..you name it!!
I miss my Jeremy more than anything. I'm not ashamed to admit it, every day is incredibly challenging, and I'd rather be in hevean with my Jeremy.
Christmas is basically S**T!! I know its the same fur a lot of you too..so I hear you from my heart!❤️

I’m so grateful for my horses and my loyal GSD dog MAJOR, they keep me going.
Devon, I thank as a place of happy memories cherished friends,,and a supportive clientele.
Moving to Northern Ireland has been an eye-opener, and I’ve faced many challenges. With my knowledge of training horses( I'm still always learning), I always try to keep it simple, focusing on trust and connection, and sharing my knowledge where I can. I truly love seeing rider-horse combinations achieve their dreams through confidence and trust, not fear. ✨ 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙄𝙨𝙣’𝙩 “𝙏𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙨” — 𝙄𝙩’𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙂𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 ✨

Every so often, someone will see me working a horse from the ground and ask, “What TRICKs are you teaching?”

And it always reminds me how easily groundwork can be misunderstood.

Over the years, training horses right through to the higher levels and watching countless combinations in the arena, one thing has become crystal clear to me:.... 🐎𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙡𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙨 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝙤𝙣.

Here’s what’s really happening in those quiet groundwork sessions:

🔹 𝙃𝙚𝙡𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙗𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚......
Simple exercises — moving the shoulders, stepping under, yielding cleanly — teach the horse how to organise their body. This is the beginning of straightness, rhythm, and self-carriage.

🔹 𝘽𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙤𝙛𝙩,..... responsive communication
When a horse understands light cues from the ground, they become softer and clearer to ride. It’s where calm, confident contact begins.

🔹 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙩𝙝..... and understanding without pressure
Pole work, lateral movements, transitions… done from the ground, these help the horse build the muscles and coordination they’ll need later on, without the added weight of a rider.

🔹 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙨..... before they show up in the saddle

So many issues people struggle with when riding — tension, crookedness, heaviness, lack of engagement — can be resolved or even prevented simply by spending time on correct groundwork.

🔹 𝘽𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮.....
This is the heart of it.

Groundwork isn’t about fancy moves; it’s where horse and handler learn to read each other. It creates the partnership you rely on once you’re riding.

🌟 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 — 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 🌟..

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿..... was treating a talented little dressage pony called Zorro.

When I first worked with him, he had so much potential but was held back by tightness and restrictions in his body.

𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗲, 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀, 𝘄𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻....., we released the tension ..... and gave him more freedom to move.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 — 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲.... happier in himself.

A few years later, Zorro was sold as an international dressage pony ✨ and I’m proud to have played a part in his journey.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸... whether your horse is competing at top level or simply your best friend, they all benefit from feeling comfortable, relaxed, and free in their movement.
