Every cat deserves a mansion - no matter their mobility.
When a customer reached out asking if we could modify one of our builds for her young cat, Birdie, who was born with radial hypoplasia, we knew we wanted to get every single detail right.
Radial hypoplasia affects a cat's front leg development, meaning this sweet girl relies heavily on her back legs to push and jump. Standard ladders and high jumps just weren't going to cut it.
We took time to understand Birdies limitations and researched how the condition effects her movement to make sure she could navigate every inch of her new playground safely and confidently. Once we had a feel for what was needed, drawings were sent over for approval from Birdie and her humans (see final 2 pictures).
Here's how we adapted this massive setup which is made up of The Playground & The Explorer connected by a 1.5m bridge:
• Backing boards on ladders to prevent any missteps or paws slipping through gaps.
• Wider ramps & extra intermediate platforms to break up heights and shorten jumping distances.
• Recessed rope channels built directly into the ramps and platforms to provide maximum rear-leg traction.
• Edge guards & extended ledges for safe resting spots along the way.
Seeing this design go from our initial sketches to this huge piece has been a brilliant experience and we can’t wait to see how Birdie and the other cats in the household enjoy their new tree.
