Having older dogs is all about management, feeding and HELP!

I am lucky to trust an amazing vet for my lot and an amazing physio. Without them I would probably be more neurotic than I am now. Lila has laryngeal paralysis, Billy is for want of a better word structurally fooked and Maggie just surprises me. All over 12.

Management is so so important to make their life the best it can be.

No grain in diet
An obsession with Sport Dog Nutrition
Exercise as much as they want to do
Help in the form of physio and acupuncture
A vet that listens to my random thoughts!

It is so so important to manage these dogs and not just medicate them!

Popped to the Aylsham Show today. Got there at 8.30am and was on my way home by 10am as far too hot for hounds.

Training exercise for Kitti as she hasn’t had much exposure to events. Very good girl. Calm and well behaved. Always helps to have a calm dog like puffin to show her how to behave.

Into the cool now. Far too hot for hounds …

I have found finding the right person to help me and the business really hard. It’s all to do with loving the animals. If my dogs love them then they are fine with me. My dogs aren’t an easy bunch. Youngest 18 months. Oldest 13. One with a lot of ailments and specific instructions need following which were carried out to the letter. They also coped with my neurotic tendencies!!

I have found two people. Belle will do house sitting and Dana walking.

Please let me know if you need someone but remember I only do household walks I do not do group walks.

I am so lucky to have found myself someone who I completely trust with my animals so she is now helping me with my pet sitting side of the business.

Belle will be available to house sit for dogs, cats and small animals for the time being.

I trust her with all of mine and she handled the 9 dogs that were here easily.

Fully insured and available to house sit when needed.

Let’s talk about Gem

Gem was my sidekick. My constant companion. Gem said it how it was and never complained about anything.

In her youth she used to come back with various types of roadkill and her and Billy spent hours hunting. She hated Cockerpoo’s and I mean hated them but this was Gem.

She helped dogs with issues and she corrected dogs if they were doing something that didn’t fit with her pack. She was the leader. If anyone says there is no such thing as an alpha bitch in a pack gem proved them wrong. She silently controlled her pack of 9, sometimes 11 but always 9.

In the latter months she became quiet. I thought it was the heat. She was eating and drinking normally and I remembered she was 12/13 so I thought it was age. Something inside was ticking away like an unexploded bomb. Last Sunday the bomb exploded and Gem could not be saved. Finding the ticking bomb earlier would not have made a difference to the outcome but at the moment it tortures me.

The pack are lacking a bit of control at the moment. Their leader has gone. Maggie dog is a different dog. She’s trotting about and all perky I don’t know why. The others just are normal with a lack of control sometimes but nothing changes there.

This is just to say treasure every moment you have with them as when they go you can’t bring them back.

I won’t lie my world fell apart last Sunday. I inwardly combusted and fell in a hole of guilt and grief. It will go I know it will and the others need to have my attention and have the best lives I can give them. A miserable mum is nooooo bloody fun.

Thank you to everyone who pulled me out of my pit. Love your animals each day like it is their last as you just don’t know when their time is up.
