Why I Choose to Train Dogs in Your Home and the Real World 🐾

One of the biggest reasons my 1-2-1 training takes place in your home and out in the real world is simple...

A dog may know how to sit, come back when called, or walk nicely on a lead in one situation, but can they do the same when the doorbell rings, another dog appears on a walk, a squirrel runs across their path, or visitors arrive at the house?

Training where the challenges naturally occur helps dogs learn how to make good choices in everyday life

🏡 At home, we can work on: • Jumping up at visitors
• Settling and relaxation
• Puppy foundations
• Door manners
• Barking and unwanted behaviours around the home
• Multi-dog household dynamics

🌳 Out in the real world, we can work on: • Recall around distractions
• Loose lead walking
• Confidence building
• Reactivity and over-excitement
• Focus around dogs, people and wildlife
• Everyday life skills for enjoyable walks

With over a decade of experience working with dogs and their families, I've found that some of the most meaningful progress happens when we work with the dog in the environments they encounter every day

Every dog is an individual, and every family has different goals and challenges. Training in real-life settings allows me to tailor each session to your dog's specific needs, helping to create practical, lasting results that fit seamlessly into your daily life

Because training isn't just about teaching behaviours

It's about building understanding, confidence and a stronger relationship between you and your dog, wherever life takes you. ❤️🐾

Meet my two rescue girls, Slate and Bracken 🐾

Slate is a Labrador cross Beagle and Bracken is a French Pointer. Both came into my life as rescue dogs and have shaped not only my life, but also the trainer I have become.

They joined us during a chapter of life spent travelling around the UK and Europe, sharing countless adventures before we eventually settled in Newtown, Powys. From beaches and forests to mountains and campsites, they've been by my side through it all, teaching me more about dogs than I could ever have imagined.

Both girls enjoy daily off-lead runs, giving them the freedom to explore, sniff, run, and simply enjoy being dogs. Alongside this, I make sure their individual breed needs are met through targeted training and enrichment.

For Slate, that means scentwork. Her nose is incredible, and giving her opportunities to search, sniff, and problem-solve taps into her natural instincts while providing valuable mental stimulation.

For Bracken, it's all about fun gundog activities. Retrieving, hunting games, and working as a team allow her to channel her natural drive and energy in a positive and fulfilling way.

This understanding of dogs as individuals is at the heart of my dog training business. For more than a decade, I've been helping owners build stronger relationships with their dogs through positive, practical training that looks beyond behaviour alone. I believe successful training comes from understanding the whole dog—their breed traits, instincts, emotions, motivations, and daily needs.

Living with dogs has taught me that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Every dog deserves to be understood, and when we meet their needs and work with who they are rather than against them, incredible things can happen.

Slate and Bracken remind me of that every single day, and they're a huge part of why I'm so passionate about helping owners create happy, confident, and well-balanced dogs.

Dog training methods range broadly from those using mostly positive punishment and negative reinforcement (aversive-based) to those using primarily positive reinforcement (reward-based). Although aversive-based training has been strongly criticized ...

Behaviour struggles with your dog can feel exhausting, emotional, and isolating — but you do not have to navigate them alone!

My behaviour consultations take place in your home and are designed to provide compassionate, practical, and science-based support for dogs experiencing behavioural challenges, while also supporting the humans who live alongside them every day

I’m Jo, an ethical and science-based dog trainer working across Newtown, Powys, and surrounding areas, offering personalised behaviour consultations focused on understanding the why behind your dog’s behaviour — not simply suppressing the symptoms.

Understanding Behaviour, Not Just Controlling It
Behaviour is communication.
Dogs are not trying to be “stubborn,” “dominant,” or “naughty.”

Many behavioural struggles are rooted in:

• Fear or anxiety
• Frustration
• Stress or overwhelm
• Lack of coping skills
• Unmet needs
• Past experiences
• Physical discomfort or pain

My approach focuses on understanding the emotional and physical factors influencing behaviour so we can create realistic, ethical, and sustainable behaviour change plans.

A Collaborative, Welfare-Focused Approach

Behaviour cases are rarely solved with a “quick fix.”
I believe the best outcomes happen when professionals work together to support the dog as a whole. I regularly work collaboratively with:

• Veterinary professionals
• Physiotherapists
• Clinical canine massage therapists
• Groomers
• Walkers
• Other ethical trainers and behaviour professionals

I am proud to receive referrals and recommendations from vets who value a modern, welfare-focused approach to behaviour support.

Research continues to show that pain and physical discomfort can significantly influence behaviour, including:

• Reactivity
• Aggression
• Handling sensitivity
• Noise sensitivity
• Anxiety
• Changes in social behaviour
• Reduced tolerance
• Avoidance behaviours

Dogs experiencing pain may not always show obvious signs of limping or injury. Behaviour changes are often one of the earliest indicators that something may not be physically right.
Because of this, I strongly believe behaviour support should always consider potential underlying medical or physical contributors.
Where appropriate, I may recommend veterinary investigation or collaborative support with other professionals to ensure dogs receive the most appropriate and ethical care possible

Behaviour Consultations can help with :

• Dog reactivity
• Fearful or anxious behaviour
• Aggression concerns
• Resource guarding
• Separation-related behaviours
• Noise sensitivities
• Handling and grooming struggles
• Rescue dog adjustment
• Hypervigilance outdoors
• Multi-dog household tensions
• Visitor-related behaviours
• Adolescent behavioural changes
• Stress-related behaviours

Every behaviour plan is tailored specifically to the individual dog, their environment, emotional wellbeing, and family situation.

Puppy Home Visits in Newtown, Powys and surrounding areas

Welcoming a new puppy into your home is exciting, rewarding, and sometimes overwhelming. My puppy home visits are designed to help you build a calm, confident, and happy relationship with your puppy from the very beginning — using ethical, science-based training methods that are kind, practical, and tailored to real family life.

Gentle Guidance for the Early Puppy Months

The first few months of a puppy’s life are a critical learning period. During this time, puppies are developing social skills, confidence, habits, and emotional responses that can last a lifetime.

Home visits allow us to work together in the environment where your puppy actually lives and learns. This means training can be practical, personalised, and immediately useful for everyday life.
Together, we can work on:

• Toilet training
• Puppy biting and chewing
• Settling calmly at home
• Sleep routines
• Preventing jumping up
• Lead and harness introduction
• Recall foundations
• Confidence building
• Socialisation guidance
• Preventing separation-related issues
• Children and puppy interactions
• Multi-dog household introductions
• Building focus and engagement
• Reward-based training foundations

Every puppy is an individual, and sessions are adapted to suit your puppy’s personality, breed traits, age, and your family’s lifestyle.
________________________________________

I focus on teaching puppies what to do through clear communication, rewards, consistency, and understanding canine behaviour.

Training should strengthen your relationship with your puppy — not damage trust.

I aim to help guardians feel confident, informed, and supported while raising a well-adjusted companion.

Why Choose Home Visits?

Many puppies learn best in familiar surroundings before facing the distractions of busy public environments.

Home visits can be especially helpful for:

• Nervous or sensitive puppies
• Busy households
• Families with children
• First-time puppy guardians
• Puppies not yet fully vaccinated
• Owners wanting personalised guidance
• Preventing unwanted behaviours before they become established

Because sessions happen in your own home, we can work on real-life situations using your puppy’s normal routines, spaces, and equipment.

When your puppy is ready to head out in the real world, I can join you there too for real life training
