Recent Ovulation Cytology Highlights ✨

Ovulation cytology is all about understanding the subtle changes happening throughout the heat cycle — and those changes can happen quickly.

Across recent samples, we’ve seen the progression from non-cornified cells (parabasal and intermediate) into fully cornified cells (superficial and anuclear), marking the transition into the fertile window. This shift is what allows us to accurately identify the optimal time for mating.

The difference between these stages can be as little as a couple of days — which is why relying on behaviour alone can often lead to missed timings.

Cytology gives a clear, visual insight into where a bitch is within her cycle, allowing for more precise and responsible breeding decisions.

Ultrasound scanning is one of the most exciting milestones in the breeding journey!

From around day 28 onwards, ultrasound allows us to confirm pregnancy, check viability, and ensure everything is progressing as it should. It’s a safe, non-invasive way to give breeders peace of mind and an early glimpse of those tiny heartbeats.

At Bijoux Breeding, we offer mobile pregnancy ultrasound scanning, carried out in your dog’s usual, familiar and happy environment, helping to keep stress to a minimum and results as accurate as possible. We also provide an estimated minimum litter count at the time of scanning. As ultrasound imaging has limitations, litter numbers cannot be guaranteed and may differ from the final number of puppies born.

Understanding ovulation cytology starts with recognising the different cell types we see during the heat cycle. In slide 1, there’s a mix of non-cornified cells (mainly parabasal and intermediate) alongside some transitioning cells — this usually indicates the earlier stage of the cycle, where oestrogen is rising but she isn’t at peak fertility yet. In slide 2, the slide is dominated by cornified cells (mostly superficial and anuclear), which is typical of full oestrus and the fertile window, helping us time mating as accurately as possible.

This is exactly why cytology can be so important — there are only two days between these slides, and without this testing, it can be very easy to miss the optimal breeding window.
