🐾 Monday Memo - Grass Seeds 🌾🐶

As the weather warms up, grass seeds become common and can be a hazard for our furry friends.

⚠️ Why are grass seeds dangerous?

Grass seeds are small, sharp, and can easily become lodged in your dog’s:
👂 Ears
👁️ Eyes
🐾 Paws (especially between the toes)
👃 Nose
🩹 Skin and coat

Once embedded, they can burrow deeper into the body, causing pain, swelling, infection, and in some cases, they may require surgery to remove.

🔍 Signs to watch for:

• Excessive licking or chewing of the paws
• Shaking the head or holding one ear down
• Sudden limping
• Red, swollen, or painful areas of skin
• Repeated sneezing or nasal discharge
• Squinting, rubbing at the eye, or eye discharge

🐕 How to help prevent grass seed problems:

✅ Avoid long grassy areas where possible.
✅ Check your dog thoroughly after every walk, paying close attention to their paws, ears, and coat.
✅ Keep the fur around your dog’s paws and ears neatly trimmed.
✅ Contact your vet promptly if you notice any of the signs above.

The sooner a grass seed is found and removed, the better the outcome for your pet.💙

🐾❤️ Meet Max – Our Wonderful Blood Donor! ❤️🐾

A big thank you to the lovely Max, who recently donated urgent blood at our out of hours clinic to help support one of our inpatients in need.

Canine blood donors are an incredibly important part of veterinary care, and we’re so grateful to dogs like Max and their owners for helping us care for patients when blood is needed.

Max was an absolute superstar throughout his visit, and we couldn’t be prouder of him. Thank you, Max, for being such a good boy and for lending a helping paw! 🐶🩸💙

🐾☀️ Hot Weather Reminder ☀️🐾

With temperatures set to soar again this week, we'll be doing our best to avoid booking routine appointments during the hottest parts of the day.

This helps reduce the need for our furry companions to travel in the heat and keeps their welfare our top priority.

Of course, we are still here for you and your pets if you need us, and all urgent appointments will continue as normal. We simply ask for your understanding as we make a few adjustments in the interests of keeping pets safe and comfortable.

If you already have a routine appointment booked and would prefer to move it to a cooler time of day, please don't hesitate to give us a call and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

Another heat wave is coming! Please be careful with ALL your pets and sensible with your walk times for dogs - walk early or late or if necessary, a day off is better than the alternative!

Dog 'lockdown' warning ahead of sizzling heatwave 🚨

The RSPCA is calling on dog owners to implement an urgent routine change next week, with more extreme hot weather forecast across the south west.

The charity is urging dog owners to prepare for another spell of high temperatures, warning that even without the extreme highs seen last month, upcoming conditions could still be very hazardous for pets.

Pet experts are recommending a ‘dog lockdown’ for the coming days, highlighting that temperatures in the high 20s still pose a serious threat to pets and should be treated with extreme caution.

Dr Samantha Gaines, dog welfare expert at the RSPCA, advised that dog owners should think of the extreme weather like a temporary lockdown for their pets - including skipping walks, not chasing the ball or playing fetch, or exposing pooches to energetic exercise.

She advises it’s far better for dogs to miss a few walks completely than to suffer the potentially fatal consequences of overheating or heatstroke.
