One week on and I think it’s about time I said a big thank you to everyone who came to see us at The North East Dog Festival. It was a great weekend (if not a little exhausting!) and such a pleasure to meet so many wonderful people and dogs.

Big shout out to my Galen Myotherapy colleagues - Sophie Holden, Sue Maclennan, Jaquay Ashford and Helen Jones.

I’m now back from a week’s leave and ready to massage some dogs.

My service is about so much more than massage. I offer support and guidance to help understand what your dog is experiencing as well as developing a lifestyle plan to meet your dogs needs. Great feedback for Maxi who has made amazing progress.

Ever got to the vets to find your lame dog presents as completely fine? Or totally forgotten to tell the vet something you later realise was relevant?

Preparing for appointments, especially when we are concerned something may be wrong can help our veterinary colleagues determine a cause or next step of investigation.

This information may also help in developing a lifestyle to support your dogs needs, which is an essential part of a multimodal approach to pain management.

When we start managing the lifestyle of a dog with long term pain, it is easy to feel like we are taking away all of the fun. But fun does not have to high impact or high energy and we may need to pivot and think about other ways to make our dogs life enjoyable and exciting. Ensuring our dogs not only have outlets for their natural behaviours, but ways to find joy is an important part of their plan. As discussed in this moths blog (link in comments) happier feelings can actually help manage pain.

Did you know that enjoyment helps manage chronic pain?

An essential part of my role is helping owners develop lifestyles and environments to help manage their dogs chronic pain. Often exercise needs to be decreased, and some activities need to be stopped. Many owners tell me they feel their dog no longer does things they enjoy. However, it is important that we ensure that dogs with chronic pain still have plenty of time and space to derive joy out of their days, as enjoyment can actually help alleviate pain symptoms. That's why thinking about what dogs can do to find joy is just as important to multimodal management of pain as medication, exercise management and environmental changes.

I explore this topic further in today's blog. Link below.
