Let’s talk about hands! 👋

As humans, we’re a very tactile species. We use our hands for all kinds of connection.

🤝 We shake hands when we meet new people.
❤️ We hold hands with people we love.
👊 We high five or fist bump to say well done.
🙋‍♂️ We part arms around our friends’ shoulders to show affection.

But most dogs, especially puppies who explore the world with their mouths and are still getting used to the world, can do without having hands all over them.

Dog’s are social creatures. They’ll often want to hang out NEXT to their human family members. They may even enjoy physically touching and sharing body heat, but that’s not always an invitation for stroking.

Often, if you let your dog snuggle or enjoy a chew/toy next to you, they’ll be content just being in your space.

Practicing the WAIT cue, which I define as a momentary pause before asking the dog for something else, which might be a recall or release cue. Here, I practice adding the 3 Ds - distance, duration and distraction - at low levels to help make the behaviour more reliable.

As a side note, what I love about this video is that Indie holds her wait while standing. There’s a misconception that wait or stay has to be done in a sitting or down position, but I like the dog to choose what works for them.

My only criteria is that they don’t move from the PLACE. The POSITION is up to them. 🧡

There are so many things about raising your dog that come down to personal choice. As a professional dog trainer, I often talk about best practice approaches to help guide my clients in the right direction. Some things don’t matter as much as others, but honestly, there are some things that just make me light up when I spot them in the wild!

I feel very passionately that as dog owners, we should be considerate of our dogs’ needs and the needs of other people while out and about. None of us are perfect and even as a pro dog trainer, I’ve misjudged or mistimed things, but overall, a lot of problems can be avoided by just paying more attention to our dogs and our surroundings.

If you want to add a little bit more interest to your dog’s daily routine, DITCH THE BOWL!

Lick mats, snuffle mats or even scattering your dog’s breakfast in the garden for them to sniff out and find are great ways of making food less boring!

It isn’t about making them work for their food but about tapping into behaviours they enjoy and are designed to do. We call this enrichment. It also makes food last a little bit longer for those dogs who clean their bowls in a split second!

Licking, sniffing and chewing are naturally calming activities for dogs to engage in, so it can also be a great way of making your dog feel more chilled!

Sniffing on walks is great for our dogs (even flat faced ones!) and should be encouraged. It helps them find key information about their environment, gives them a calming activity to focus on and helps them breathe in a regulated way, so particularly good for anxious dogs!

So last month I concluded my 10 year career in marketing and PR to focus solely on dog training, which had been something of a small side hustle until that point!

Still can’t quite believe that I’m living the actual dream of working with dogs as my only, full-time job, but here we are!

Never thought my office would look like this! 💙
