How I train a dog who forgets her recall when she's on scent of wildlife.

I've got Sam for 3 weeks, after which, I'll be teaching her owner all the things I've done with Sam.

The biggest challenge is that Sam is passionate about "hunting" for wild scents and she had been practising doing this for years. She's independent when on scent and becomes unresponsive.

The owners want to improve her recall and proximity without remote training tools (i.e. e-collar), but they also want Sam to have off-lead freedom.

I am sharing with you my training strategy for Sam and what we get up to in our 3 weeks of residential training.

Memory retrieve with heel!

For a spaniel, this is a perfect multi-skill exercise that will promote your "stop pulling on the lead" practice (heel away from the retrieve item), patience (wait while you drop the item) and also give your dog a fun task to do (the retrieve) that uses their brain, their nose and their enthusiasm for running.
