This week's Spaniel Training Task (new series!)

1. Hide a small retrieve item in an area of cover, as your dog is watching. Don't let your dog figure out from watching where the item is. The lighter your cover, the smaller your item should be.

2. Throw a dummy about 5-10 m behind your dog

3. Hunt with your dog for the hidden object, away from that dummy you've just thrown.

4. Keep your dog hunting side to side, not too far forward.

5. When your dog finds the hidden item, recall and praise (or pay).

6. Send your dog out from heel position for that memory retrieve.

7. Celebrate together 🥳

Is your cocker or springer spaniel ignoring you when outside and extremely excited about the environment?
Here are 2 reasons why she how to change this:

1) you're seeing the wrong expectations. Making walks all about sniffing by themselves is teaching your spaniel that you're not part of the most exciting thing in their life: hunting. Spaniels are a hunting breed and they don't just want to hunt. They NEED TO. This is why young spaniels don't just go on walks, they go out to hunt.

Develop a partnership in that most precious activity with them as early on as possible and don't encourage "free hunting" until they are fully mature and you have at least a year of practising that strong connection outside.

2) you're using the wrong rewards. treats and praise will only get you so far in your training. They might not be enough when set against exciting things in the environment.

Learn how to choose and maximise your rewards, and your training results will surprise you.
