I see this wrong training advice everywhere and it's what stops dogs from learning the word we want them to associate with the skill (eg. heel or sit or stop).

👎🏻 We don't say the word as the dog is already doing the thing
👍🏻 We say the word just before the dog does the thing. Or just before we give them the hand signal.

Can you think of the reason why? Tell me in the comments.

Turn Whistle is one of the skills from Hunt As One programme where you and your spaniel learn to "hunt" together.

This is how we get to understand and harness our spaniels' instincts for better off-lead control, instead of competing with them or suppressing them.

In step one we did this exact exercise (cashed Ping Pong) but without the whistle. We only added the whistle when we knew that he was very likely to want more after each rep of chasing the food.

This lad is so crazy about sniffs and the environment that initially he had no interest in food or toys outside. We're gradually building this up.

Most people don't even know that their park walks are boring and the constant ball chasing is actually terrible for their dogs' joints and brain.

I visited a park in Swansea and fined LOTS of fun things to do instead. I'm starting these with you in this mini series.

And before you come at me in the comments, I do know that the goofy praise is not necessary for the two puppies. Calmer would probably work better for them, but the party helps Rolo the brown sprocker at the moment, because it lifts him right out of the worry. We will tone it down a bit later and eventually add a stop/sit. Then, we will pair the bang with a potential retrieve opportunity. Only then we introduce everyone's favourite gundog training toy: the dummy launcher.

This was keeping me stuck in the one step forward - two steps backwards loop for ages when I first tried to teach my dog lead walking skills (no pulling).

And it's especially relevant to spaniels!

Does your spaniel know that instead of dragging you by the lead, they can heel you to wherever they want?

Do they know you'll actually walk obediently and eagerly, as fast as your two little legs allow, so long as the spaniel is heeling you correctly?

All that the spaniel needs to learn is to heel.

Humans are pretty simple really.
