We love having students here as they are a pleasure to work with and keep us thinking, learning and explaining!
We enjoy it even more when they make incredible cookies, and not only bring them in to share but then provide the most beautifully written and illustrated recipe so we can make our own supply (likely to be a weekly event they were so good!). So thank you very much to Iman for the last two weeks, you are welcome back any time - for your caring personality, hard work and enthusiasm, but also a little bit for the cookies!

Lovely to have the beautiful Savannah in today. She was here as support for her companion as we manage his ongoing sore leg but was more than happy to be the centre of attention and take some pressure off him! She was beautifully behaved and enjoyed treats and cuddles with staff.

We have new additions to the farm side here.

Five 8 week old Oxford sandy and black piglets have joined the madhouse and we're looking forward to seeing them grow!

We couldn't be happier to see this little face today for a check up. Kaboo was initially rushed in as an emergency in the middle of the night and, after stabilisation, tests found that his liver was struggling. A biopsy was collected which showed that 80% of his liver cells were damaged beyond repair. Amazingly this tough little bunny has battled through and against all odds is thriving. Fortunately the remaining healthy liver cells have started to regenerated giving his liver a second chance. He still has a little way to go before we can sign off his ongoing medications and supervision but we couldn't be happier with his progress

Phase 2 of our building is nearly complete and here's a sneak peek at some of the new enclosures we had arrive today for our reptile ward.
These new vivaria include walk in arboreal enclosures, tortoise tables, aquatic set-ups and super-hygienic sealed vivaria, all with the highest spec heating, UVB lighting and the fanciest day-night thermostats that send alerts to our phones of any changes to the tightly controlled parameters so we are always aware of what's going on.
Not only do they look outstanding but we are able to safely hospitalise reptiles of any size and type under the highest possible standards.

As an exotics and zoo practice, we don't see cats. But we might make the occasional exception!
This week we have operated on a bobcat with an elbow problem, and we have also had Lily our practice cat in the clinic for ongoing treatment of some dental problems. Both are back at home now recuperating

We're not specialists!
Well, OK technically we are on paper, but being a zoo and exotics vet requires an ability to work in all fields of veterinary medicine across tens of thousands of species, and so it's impossible to consider anyone truly specialised in such a wide field. This is why we work so hard to keep up to date with as much new research as possible.
This week we're focusing on the field of ophthalmology, with cases of cataracts in a Boobok owl, chronic corneal inflammation in a rabbit and lipid degeneration in a frog! The variety of conditions and species always keeps us on our toes πŸ¦‰πŸΈπŸ‡

Zoo vet conference!
This weekend Marie and Kelly have been at the British Veterinary Zoological Conference, which is 3 days of lectures and masterclasses on zoo, pet exotic and wildlife veterinary topics. Ongoing training and education is essential not only to maintain professional status as advanced practitioners and Specialists, but as exotic animal medicine is such a fast evolving field it is crucial to keep up to date with the latest information and techniques

Dermatology can be exciting!
Skin problems aren't always the most exhilarating cases, but when we have such stunning patients, even the less dramatic appointments are a pleasure.
This week our exotic dermatology cases included hair loss in an armadillo, itchy skin in a squirrel monkey, and various bird species with different skin lesions.

With all our poultry now confined to winter quarters due to the mandatory housing order in place, we're looking back to the better times we've had this year with the chickens and turkeys enjoying better weather and more space.
They've now got the dubious privilege of being part of Harper Keele vet school's teaching, getting vet students used to poultry housing, management and handling, and will hopefully be encouraging an appreciation of poultry in the next generation of vets
