Understanding What Your Dog’s Coat May Be Telling You

Have you noticed a section of your dog’s coat flicking up, lying in an odd direction, or looking different to the surrounding fur? These subtle changes can be more than just a grooming issue—they may be a clinical indicator of underlying muscular or fascial tension.

🎓 What Causes Coat Flicks?

Muscle groups that are overworked or under strain often develop tension patterns. These occur when a muscle is repetitively asked to contract or lengthen over extended periods without adequate rest or recovery. As a result, the muscle may become hypertonic (chronically tight), develop myofascial trigger points, or begin to spasm, leading to dysfunctional movement.

These dysfunctions often manifest through the coat, with fur lifting or flicking in patterns that mimic the shape of the muscle or fascial lines underneath. The fascial system—an interconnected web of connective tissue—can also become restricted, causing abnormal tension that presents externally.

🧠 According to Schleip et al. (2012), fascial restrictions can transmit abnormal tension across muscle chains, altering posture and movement, and may contribute to pain and discomfort in both humans and animals.

🔬 Clinical Observations

In recent weeks, I’ve treated several dogs presenting with unusual coat flicks. On palpation, these areas corresponded with:
• Myofascial trigger points
• Muscle spasms
• Localised fascial adhesions

These findings are consistent with myofascial pain syndrome, where affected tissue becomes sensitive and dysfunctional, often without visible injury. These are not just cosmetic coat issues—they’re clues to deeper biomechanical imbalances.
