This is so true! It's so important to read these signals early and respond to what your dog is communicating.

The danger of misreading early stress signals in dogs
Not all “excited” or “playful-looking” behaviour is actually play.
And what happens in the seconds before a behaviour matters more than most people realise.
Dogs often communicate discomfort in very subtle ways first, like sniffing the ground out of context, (displacement sniffing) a quick shake off, looking away or disengaging, or sudden changes in movement or energy
These are easy to miss. But they’re important.
They’re a dog’s way of saying
“I’m not fully comfortable right now.”
When those early signals are misunderstood or ignored, the dog’s behaviour often escalates.
What might later look like, jumping up, or grabbing the lead, mouthing or lunging, can actually be the result of built-up stress or overarousal, not simple play.

The risk of misreading this isn’t just confusion, it can lead to, dogs being pushed beyond their comfort zone, increased anxiety or frustration, and behaviours becoming more intense over time

With positive training the goal isn’t to label behaviour quickly, it’s to understand the full picture.
By paying attention to those small, early signals, we can, respond sooner, reduce stress, and help dogs feel safer and more understood
Sometimes the quietest signals are the most important ones.
