🌡️ Heatstroke in Dogs — What to Watch For This Week🐶
It’s heating up, and dogs overheat way faster than we do as they can’t sweat it out like we can, so a walk can turn dangerous quickly.
Signs of heatstroke:
• Heavy panting that won’t settle
• Bright red gums or tongue
• Drooling more than usual
• Wobbly legs or collapse
• Vomiting
• Confused or glassy-eyed look
If you spot any of this, get them into shade, offer water, and call your vet straightaway. Don’t wait to see if it passes.
Keeping dogs safe this week:
• Walk early morning or evening, when the grounds had time to cool
• Pavement test: if it’s too hot for your hand for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for paws
• Always carry water on walks (you should be doing this all year anyway!)
• Stick to shaded routes (like wooded areas)
• Never leave a dog in a car, even a few minutes can be fatal
• Flat-faced breeds, older dogs, and overweight dogs overheat fastest so please go easier on them
