Rehab livery isn’t just about box rest or ticking boxes in a programme, we endeavour to create the right environment for a horse to rebuild strength, confidence, and soundness in a structured, professional way.

At our rehab livery, we offer tailored support for horses recovering from injury, managing chronic conditions, or needing careful management alongside veterinary treatment. Every horse is assessed individually so their plan reflects what they actually need, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

We combine on-site facilities with clinical oversight and hands-on care to support every stage of recovery. This can include:

- Structured controlled exercise programmes
- Water treadmill work to support low-impact fitness and symmetry
- Individualised rehabilitation plans designed alongside vet guidance
- Physiotherapy input to address compensatory patterns and soft tissue restriction
- Laser therapy to support tissue healing and inflammation management
- Progressive strengthening work to rebuild correct movement patterns
- Ongoing monitoring and adjustment as the horse changes through rehab

The aim is always the same: restore function, not just manage symptoms. That means improving how the horse moves, how they carry themselves, and how they cope once they return to work.

Some horses come to us for short-term rehabilitation after injury. Others stay longer-term for ongoing management of complex or chronic issues. Either way, the focus is on clear progression, communication, and measurable improvement.

If you’d like to talk through whether rehab livery could support your horse, you can find more information at www.rpmequine.co.uk.

As I’ve been working through my master’s project write-up, I’ve been reflecting on my physiotherapy practice over the past few weeks.

Equine physiotherapy often gets described as either “hands-on holistic work” or “exercise-based rehab,” but in reality it sits firmly in both when it’s applied well.

At its core, I view it as a simple, structured process: restore mobility, then build capacity.

First, we address how the horse is moving through the system. This includes posture, tissue tension, joint mobility, limb alignment, and movement organisation. Hands-on treatment, mobilisation, and stretching are used to improve movement quality and reduce compensatory patterns, not as an end point, but to improve how the horse can function.

Then we move into loading and re-education. This is where exercise becomes the treatment. We develop strength, stability, and coordination so the horse can actually use improved mobility under real work demands.

The evidence base around rehabilitation consistently supports this approach: improve movement quality where it is limited, then apply progressive load to drive adaptation.

One without the other is incomplete.

✨ ONE OFF SATURDAY WATER TREADMILL CLINIC ✨
11am–3pm

We know not everyone can make our usual Sunday sessions, especially with our pole clinics and occasional personal commitments meaning we can’t always run them consistently. So, we’re opening up a one-off Saturday clinic for those wanting to get booked in 👏

Whether your horse is:
• returning from injury
• needing support alongside ridden work
• struggling with strength, symmetry or topline
• competing regularly
• older and needing low impact conditioning
• or simply benefiting from supportive maintenance work

our water treadmill and physiotherapy sessions can be tailored to suit the individual horse.

💧 Benefits of water treadmill work:
• Low impact strengthening
• Improves joint range of motion
• Encourages core and epaxial engagement
• Helps develop balance, coordination and straightness
• Supports rehabilitation and post-injury conditioning
• Assists with circulation and recovery
• Adjustable water height and speed depending on goals

👐 Physiotherapy sessions include:
• Full assessment and gait analysis
• Manual therapy and soft tissue work
• Mobilisations and stretching
• Exercise prescription and rehab planning
• Support for performance, maintenance and rehabilitation horses
• Tailored, extensive follow up report

Our sessions are always horse-led and individualised. We focus on understanding the horse in front of us, their workload, compensation patterns and long-term goals.

We also offer:
✔️ Water treadmill blocks of 8 at a reduced price
✔️ Our Physio + Treadmill Intro Combo Session is still running for new clients

From the end of June we’ll also be opening up more regular water treadmill and physiotherapy availability, so watch this space 👀

A lot of performance issues in horses aren’t as straightforward as they first appear.

What can look like a lack of engagement, straightness, or consistency is often linked to how the horse is managing its body with and without a rider.

Assessment is never just about soreness or isolated findings.
Each horse is assessed in detail for how they function as a system: posture, hoof balance, limb alignment, loading patterns, pelvic symmetry, and movement organisation.

From there, it is always related back to their job:
how they move loose versus under saddle,
compensations,
aversions or reactivity,
and whether the limitation is mobility, strength, or coordination.

In horses in regular work or competition, small inefficiencies accumulate into what we see as asymmetry, inconsistency, or loss of straightness.

This was particularly clear at yesterday’s polework clinic.

Rein back and lateral work highlighted subtle differences side to side, horses finding one direction easier, struggling to organise the limbs in lateral work, or showing reduced coordination behind when asked to step across or sit.

This kind of detail can explain what is happening under saddle.

Treatment has its place, but the real value is in identifying what is limiting the horse and building a clear plan around it, whether that is targeted exercise, changes in workload, or refinement of training approach.

The aim is not just short-term change in how the horse feels, but improved movement quality, better efficiency, and more consistent performance over time.

☀️ With the heat coming Sunday & Monday, we’re adjusting things to keep your horses comfortable.

Our treadmill will be set to 4°C as standard ❄️

Cooler water can really help:
– take the edge off inflammation
– support tired limbs after competing or harder work
– help with circulation and general recovery
– keep them more comfortable working in the heat

Ideal if you’ve been competing, increasing workload, or managing a rehab case, particularly in the weekend heat.

We’ve also got spa sessions available if you just want a simple recovery option.

💙 Rocky’s Rehabilitation Journey 💙

We’ve had the pleasure of supporting Rocky through his kissing spine rehabilitation whilst he’s been based on site with georgiebrownequestrian.

As his workload has progressed, we’ve seen a natural increase in demand through his topline (particularly the epaxial muscles) leading to some tension and tightness. This is a really common (and important) phase as horses rebuild strength and adapt to correct movement patterns.

We initially introduced water treadmill sessions to improve stride regularity and encourage consistent epaxial engagement in a controlled environment. As his ridden work increased, we layered in targeted physiotherapy alongside 3B laser therapy to support muscle recovery, reduce discomfort, and optimise performance.

And as you can see… Rocky definitely approved of the laser treatment (more photos and videos in the comments) 😌✨

Rocky has now headed home, but we’ll continue to support both him and his rider with tailored exercise prescription and ongoing laser therapy as needed.

Wishing them all the best as they continue this journey 💙

🐎 Vet Physio-Led Polework Clinic 24.05.26 🐎

Looking to improve your horse’s way of going, straightness, and overall performance? Our vet physio-led polework clinics are designed to do exactly that,in a structured, progressive, and horse-centred way.

Held in our indoor arena, these sessions run whatever the weather, giving you a consistent training environment to focus on your horse’s development.

✨ Perfect for:
• Horses in rehabilitation or returning to work
• Horses with reduced mobility, asymmetry, or weakness
• Young horses building strength and coordination
• Performance horses needing that extra edge
• Riders wanting a better understanding of how polework supports biomechanics

Each session is guided by veterinary physiotherapy knowledge, meaning exercises are tailored to target specific muscle groups, improve joint range of motion, and enhance movement quality, not just “going over poles.”

Whether your goal is rehab, strengthening, or performance, these clinics offer a supportive, educational environment for both horse and rider.
