Muzzle training is very often overlooked in companion dogs!

However this important piece of safety equipment is an important training point for all dogs - in our opinion!

There are many circumstances where you may require a dog to be muzzled and not all are predictable!

When am I ever gonna need that, my dog is super friendly? Well how about…

🐾 - emergency vet visits, (this is the big one) if your dog has a serious accident/injury, you never know how it’ll react to that pain and fear!

🐕 - the groomers, being in a confined space with a strange human who has loud blowers and water can be a real scary place for dogs.

🦮 - travel, Some locations, areas and situation require all dogs to be muzzled, if the dog is happy in a muzzle then it doesn’t restrict you and your pup from those areas.

🐩 - dog sports! Some sports require muzzle acceptance for some of the exercises, so training it early will help you get there quicker!

Muzzles don’t need to be the devil and dogs can very quickly become very comfortable in a muzzle. But it needs training and shouldn’t ever be something that they’re just having plonked on their face without understanding!

So help your dog to understand, should anything out of the normal happen and train muzzles - just Incase 😊

Hobbies, jobs and general activities are frequently overlooked or disregarded as something that people do with super high driven and high energy dogs.

But

ANY dog can do some kind of sports or activity!
and there are a tonne of benefits including;

🦮 - Genetic fulfilment - many breeds are originally bred for a purpose and sports can help to emulate that and give them an outlet for that.

🐕‍🦺 - Relationship with your dog - doing something fun together is a great way to bond and enjoy your time together.

🐾 - Help with unwanted behaviours - A fulfilled and tired dog is less likely do display unwanted behaviours than a bored one.

🐕 - Training - learning a sport or a hobby can help you improve your training as well as assist in things such as socialisation.

There are absolutely heaps of sports for dogs, from protection sports, to scent work, to fly ball, to canicross (And way more!)! All of these come with a great community of like minded people, as well as loads of really cool dogs!

A super busy but successful weekend for team Armatus!!

We’ve had Shel & Paul away on their IGP helper training weekend, on behalf of Waltham Sports Dog Club, with them both putting in an excellent performance. Paul also achieved his IGP helper licence!

As well as this Nadia has been away to the Netherlands supporting Jazz and Venom competing! Where they smashed their first competition coming a very impressive 3rd place and taking the highest points in the category for their obedience!

Thank you all for your patience with the slightly slower responses and all the support we’ve all received this weekend!

Now we’re all back to normality, we kick the week of with a NASDU GP course!

Comparison will always take your joy and we’re all guilty of making comparisons far too frequently.

“Oh but my last *insert same breed here* was nothing like this one”

“My friend started the same time and they’re doing *X, Y, Z* better than we are”

“The other littermates are nothing like this one”

And so many more are things we hear really regularly!

STOP THAT!

You are an individual,
Your dog is an individual,
Sometimes life gets in the way,
Sometimes a different approach is needed,

Variety is the spice of life, stop comparing and start training what’s in front of you, that way, you’ll enjoy the journey, every step of the way!

Who recognises these 3 chaps?

It’s finally hair cut day!! The Alpacas have been pretty warm the last few weeks (Well, maybe in June more than July) and although we managed to shear the sheep ourselves, the ‘devil camels’ were a-bit beyond our terrible skills!

Needless to say, they look ridiculous 🤣 but I’m sure they feel much better 😅 (also turns out they’re pretty small under all that floof)

😩 It can be frustrating if we don't see the progress that we want with our dogs, especially when we regularly go to training. But are we really putting in the time outside of our sessions?

👩‍🏫 As trainers, we aim to provide owners and their dogs with tailored guidance to enable them to work through their training goals successfully away from the training field.
But as we spend maybe an hour a week or less with them, it is down to owners to really put in the graft and consistently implement the training steps in order to progress.

🐕 So as dog owners we need to remember that everyday is a training day for our dogs no matter what we're doing, and it is us who can have the most impact on training progress.
Even just a couple of 5 minute training sessions each day, or while the kettle boils, will have an impact!

Consistency is KEY!

Dogs are super clear cut creatures and when we blur the lines they get very confused!

If you ask them to leave their toy at home, but it doesn’t happen, why would it happen when they’re excited and out in the world?

If you leave the house and they drag you to the nearest patch of grass, but then you’d like them to walk politely down the street passed the next patch of grass, why would they?

We need to ensure we’re consistent in what we ask for. Training separate pictures for the home and outside is tricky work, so keep it simple and ensure your rules remain the same.

Did you know that when a dog uses it's nose, it's body releases 'happy hormones' such as dopamine?

This means that dogs absolutely love all things scent based!

Teaching games such as scentwork can channel energy, relax the dog and also give you both a fun game to play together. Scentwork is super accessible open to all breeds of dogs, all ages and all abilities, even deaf/blind dogs can play!

It's fun and simple to get started at home or at a local class or club and there's competitions too, for those who really get into it!

Here at the centre 'Shel runs Scentwork twice a week, Tuesdays and Saturdays, why not check it out and see what you and your dog can achieve.

As behaviourists we regularly have clients highlighting new sudden behaviour changes in their dogs.

Our first port of call is a vet visit.

Although sudden occurrences of behaviour can be linked to learning events, in some cases these can be linked to pain, illness or hidden injury. The dog may present as health and they cannot tell us when they're in pain or unwell, which can produce behavioural outputs.

By ensuring our dogs have had a thorough veterinary assessment to identify any health issues, this allows us to begin to build a picture as to where the behaviours may have originated and look to formulate a plan going forward, accounting for behavioural and health elements.

"My dog is so naughty"

"They just do it to wind me up"

"My dog is so stubborn, he refuses to do (insert behaviour here)"

Our dogs aren't being 'naughty' or stubborn; they're not doing things deliberately to wind us up when they ignore us or don't do what we want, when we want.

They're simply doing the best they can with the prior learning and experiences we've given them.
All of our dog's behaviours are a result of their prior learning and experiences. And if they're not doing something we want them to do it will be because...

• we haven't taught them what to do or taught them well enough.
• we haven't prepared them for the specific situation.
• and our dog is unable to do what we want under the current circumstances (it's not that they won't do it).

So when your dog does something that you think they shouldn't, something that frustrates you, something in public that makes you feel embarrassed, just remember this quote from Susan Garrett

Muzzle training is for all dogs 🐕

It is an awesome skill to train, and there are many reasons as to why this training can benefit ours and our dog's lives.

Whether it is to be used as a tool to build confidence in owners and as a safety element with anxious dogs, or as a translatable skill for a multitude of purposes and tricks, it is key to introduce the muzzle as a positive experience so that our dogs can feel confident and comfortable while wearing them

As with a lot of other skills, even though it isn't a skill you need right now, it is beneficial to train before you ever need it.

09/06/2023

We’ve all seen the news, it’s gonna be a hot weekend (finally)!

But that can pose some issues for our 4 legged friends!

Heatstroke can be fatal and it’s important to keep an eye on your dog in the warmer weather! Some dogs are more susceptible than others.

Young, fit, healthy dogs also can acclimatise really well and sensible exposure to heat can assist with that process.

Shorter walks, lighter work and hanging in shaded areas can help. Always ensuring that your dog has access to frequent water breaks.

Over cooling a hot dog can also have its dangers so take caution in use of ice and very cold water.

So bust out the fans, silver shades and gallons of water and continue to enjoy your dogs, but if you see any of the symptoms below beginning to build and there’s any doubt, seek veterinary advice quickly!

Anyone visiting us this weekend, we will have shade up, water available and the pools will have water in them, we’re all first aiders and will help advise on your dog throughout your session. But please ensure your vehicle is set and suitable for your dog, you know your dogs better than us 😊.

If you have concerns please just contact us to rearrange your session/check the temp up at the centre.

We just want to give a massive shout out to Matty, who’s on his way to the US to decoy for the US East Coast Regionals PSA trial!!

We couldn’t be more proud of him and all he’s achieved, we may only be a small part but his hard work and ongoing hunger to learn have opened up this brilliant opportunity for him to head over to America, the home of PSA, to take part!

Massive good luck and well done from not only Armatus PSA but also the whole of Armatus!

Go smash it mate 💪

As many of you know the NASDU EDD Level 4 changed in 2022,

The old system is no longer available to be certified under and all handlers must now be trained to the new 2022 version.

To that end we are running a change over course to all handlers still on the old system to ensure that they progress into the new qualification and remain current in their skills.

The course will be 7 days consecutively but handlers will still be subject to external assessment at the end, as with any course and should they not be to required standard may require extra hours of training.

We have limited space available.

Should you wish to book please email [email protected] for details.

18/05/2023

Today is a very special day!

Our mascot Retired Military Working Dog ‘Titch’ is 15 years old today!

The then named ‘NPA detection dog Bitch’ was purchased (and renamed) by the British Army as a High Assurance Search dog (HASD) where she served many years in Afghanistan, keeping many soldiers and handlers safe. She then was brought back to the UK and was chosen due to her temperament and capability to be retrained to a new discipline, Protection and Explosives Detection (PEDD), in which her talent shon through, becoming one of the very first 5 to licence in this new discipline.

Titch then retired and was rehomed to her handler, Jazz, where she’s lived for the last 7 years, along with Scott, Retired Military Working dog Sam and their 4 other dogs. Through her retirement she didn’t just hang up her harness, she’s been used to demonstrate searching, protection work, first aid skills and to help to train puppies.

She’s had her share of battles in the last couple years, suffering strokes, spinal degradation, partial blindness and general old age, but her spicy, truly Malinois, nature remains strong and she still enjoys harnessing up for a little search or grabbing a little sleeve to bully people into playing.

So if you see this special lady poddling around be sure to wish this very special lady, a very special birthday!

So from all of us at Armatus, a very Happy 15th Birthday Titch.

Our Story

Armatus Risks Canine was started by ex military personnel with a passion for working with dogs.

We bring our professionalism and energy into an industry with the aim of being a name people associate with high standards and reliability. Our training team might seem young, but they are all ex Army, some being ex military working dog handlers themselves. Between the team we own 22 of our own working dogs and have over 40 years experience combined. Retired Military Working Dog Titch is our mascot after serving 6 years in the Army as a Search and Protection dog.

We are realistic in our approach to training and work in a relaxed atmosphere to get the best out of the people and dogs that train with us. Every dog and their handler is different, that's why each and every training session we run is tailored to them. Our courses are run throughout the year with competitive rates, discounts for veterans and previous students. We have contacts up and down the country so we have the ability to train at venues to give future dog handlers the best experience possible before doing the job.

So if you want to take on the life of a dog handler, or want somewhere to train, come and pull up a sandbag with us.

A 2.5 hrs van journey, (traffic held us up) zero complaining or toileting.

The Beans then charged on to the field like they owned it... super confident, diving straight into everyone and everything 🙌 👌 👏

Could not be prouder of these (not so) Little Beans

A great big thanks not only to those who turned out to Farmer Barnes Dairy to support us today, but also to our hosts and exhibitors.

The intention was to have a one stop event for people to speak to us and those present for crime prevention advice, and to feedback on how we can improve the service we give to the rural public of Leicestershire.

The first PSA CLUB Meet down Armatus Canine

Awesome Dogs and Awesome People... A real nice atmosphere.

Crowely and Sophie got a few firsts in

Including their first Car Jacking Scenario, this was also Crowleys first experience of a suit, which is much different to working a sleeve.

Theres also not so much agitation for the Dog before the actual bite, again, a totally new concept for Crowley.

They also tackled some Down Stays and OB around distractions, and but we starting to loose light at this point so no photos 😔

Looking forward to the next Club Day

With November 11th coming up fast, and Remembrance Sunday just past, we’d like to take today to show our gratitude to all Veterans and those still serving.

I have been lucky enough to spend a lot of my time with many men, women and dogs from Ireland, the U.K., and the US that served their country.

“When you go home, tell them of us and say;
For your tomorrow, we gave our today”

Lest we forget 💕
