We all know that if we are teaching a behaviour, we need to get the repetitions in to help the dog learn...

But what many people don't realise is that this also occurs with unwanted behaviours. If we allow the dog to continually practice a behaviour that we don't want, it will learn that behaviour more strongly.

So how do we help to stop/prevent unwanted behaviours?

Well firstly we put some management in place. This ensures we put a plan in place that allows you to get on with the day to day, but sets the dog up so it cannot practice the unwanted behaviour.

Then we apply environmental changes. If we can modify the environment the dog is in, often that can help the dog to feel more comfortable and provides the dog with an alternative to practicing the problem behaviour.

Then we have behaviour modification training, where we work on foundations, to help fix that behaviour over time (which very rarely involves working immediately with the thing that we have a problem with).

It is important to remember that these measures are temporary and only expected to be in place whilst behaviour change is taking place, however, they are also vital for success when dealing with an unwanted behaviour. Constant exposure to the thing that your dog has a problem with, generally only makes things worse and limits results of any training taking place.

Now this may sound ridiculous, but does your dog know how to just chill out?

Many dogs, especially high drive dogs and puppies, will refuse to rest effectively, which in turn can lead to them acting out and generally causing trouble. Aside from their behaviours, it can also be detrimental to their health, exactly as with humans, dogs require good sleep to remain healthy and happy.

So, very often we need to teach them how!

Teaching them to relax and switch off can be tricky, especially later in life but it's very worth the effort. It can also assist us with keeping them calm when we have visitors or keeping them calm when life gets busy in general.

Things we can do to help...
- Give them a quiet, safe place to have time to themselves
- Set routines in puppies to help with predictability and learning
- Stimulate their brain, just walking is very often not enough to get those little brains working hard
- Feed an appropriate diet
- Leave them in peace when they are resting (I know, its hard when they look so cute)
- Teach a settle behaviour

Muzzle training!

Muzzles aren't just for 'aggressive' or 'dangerous' dogs. Muzzle training (in our opinion) is an essential skill that all dogs should have, no matter their size, breed or temperament. You never know when you may need to muzzle even the friendliest of dogs, especially in an emergency situation.

However,

There's more to it than just plonking a muzzle on a dog and feeding it a few tasty treats. Muzzles can be quite stressful for dogs if they aren't trained properly and getting a dog to wear a muzzle for more than a few seconds can take some real training effort.

Things to note before even beginning training are;
- Type of muzzle, is the muzzle you have suitable for your dog, suitable for the reason the dog is wearing it and suitable for the amount of time it's expected to wear it.
- Size of muzzle, a properly fitted muzzle is important for comfort and safety, you don't want it popping off when you need it most!

Please stop just putting muzzles on dogs and hoping for a desirable outcome, almost all dogs need some work putting into accepting a muzzle.

🪳🕷Let's talk creepy crawlies!! 🕷🪳

Ticks are less prevalent in winter but with the warmer autumn this year they are still loitering in wait.

But do you know how to spot and deal with these little guys?

Ticks that haven't yet fed are small spider looking creatures that hang out close to the dogs skin. Once they have bitten on and fed however they look like a small grey lump. They're often found around the face and around the arm pits/high legs of the dog but can appear anywhere on the dog. A quick check after walks will help identify them early.

but how do I know if it's a skin tag or a tick?

Legs! that's how! a skin tag/lump will be attached cleanly at the skin, where as a tick will have scrawny little legs visible when the hair is parted.

They will feed for a few days then drop off of the dog, but that doesn't mean we leave them there and wait. We can remove them.

Removal is done with either a specialist tick hook/remover or with some tweezers (don't listen to the old wives tales of smothering them in vaseline or burning them off, this can cause way more harm than good)! Simply hook under the base of tick, close to the skin and spin them clockwise until they drop off, no pulling, squeezing or tugging or you risk leaving part of the tick inside the dog, they will wind out after a few seconds. Then just check the skin to ensure there is nothing left on the dog.

IF IN DOUBT ASK YOUR VET FOR HELP.

07/11/2023

As we’ve all seen in the news, the XL Bully is due to be added to the dangerous dogs act as one of the breeds banned within the UK.

The XL Bully by law will be deemed a ‘type’ which means some other breeds may also fall into type, so if you’re worried please check out the official definition here -
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/official-definition-of-an-xl-bully-dog/official-definition-of-an-xl-bully-dog

But what does that mean for owners?

As of the 31st Dec 2023,
- It will be illegal to sell, give away, abandon or breed from an XL bully.
- All XLs will be required to be muzzled and on leash at all times in public.

As of the 1st Feb 2024
- It will be illegal to OWN an XL bully in England or Wales, that doesn’t have a certificate of exemption.
- Certificates of exemption must have been applied for.

You will have to Neuter your dog in 2024 but the age of the dog will determine the date that it is required to happen.
- If the dog is older than ONE year on 31st Jan 24, then it must be neutered by 30th June 24.
- If the dog is younger than ONE year on 31st Jan 24, then it must be neutered by 31st Dec 24.

The owners of the XL bully must;
- Be older than 16 years old.
- Have liability insurance for the dog.
- Be able to produce exemption certificates when requested.

All of this information can be found here -
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/prepare-for-the-ban-on-xl-bully-dogs

We know it’s a stressful time for any owner of a dog that may fall into the category of the XL Bully, we are here to help! We offer free muzzle training and will HAPPILY continue to train these dogs, we will also do our very best to stay current and to help advise as best as we possibly can throughout this process.

NADIA IS BACK!!

🌟 Human Factors in Dog Training 🌟

How do you influence your dog?

With this absolutely UNIQUE look into dog training, Nadia Jouni BSc (hons) MSc delves into how you can help your dog!

Dog training is far more than simply training a dog, the human factor within dog training also has a massive impact on your ability to reach any training goals you may have, no matter the level.

Here are some examples where you, the dog owner, contributes to a situation more than you realise:

- Your dog behaves perfectly when you hand them over to the trainer, but you swear they are never this good the rest of the time.
- Your dog appears to struggle to overcome or recover from historical negative experience, you are certain they must be ‘traumatised’ as they definitely act different when in similar situations now.
- You try your best but other people set back your training progress with your dog on a regular basis.

In ALL of these situations, and more, believe it or not, you are playing a potentially larger role than your dog is in hindering progress or preventing you from achieving your goals!

The good news? There are ways in which you can in address these ‘human factors’.

Human Factors in Dog Training Seminar – An introduction to key tools and techniques, rooted in science and understanding of human behaviour, to get the most out of your human-dogs relationships!

🎆🐶 Fireworks Night Dog Safety 🐾✨

Although we are huge advocates for training your dogs to be prepared for fireworks, starting now is too late!

So let’s look at some things to help your pups as fireworks night approaches, to ensure our furry friends are safe and comfortable. Here are some tips to help your dogs through the festivities:

1️⃣ Create a safe space: Set up a quiet, comfortable area where your dog can retreat if they get scared.

2️⃣ Keep them indoors: Keep your dogs indoors during fireworks displays to reduce anxiety.

3️⃣ Aromatherapy: Calming scents like Lavender have been proven to help calm anxiety in both dogs and humans.

4️⃣ Distraction can help: Play soothing music or engage in a fun indoor activity to divert their attention.

5️⃣ ID and microchip: Ensure your dog's ID tags and microchip information are up to date in case they get lost.

6️⃣Stay calm: Your pets can pick up on your anxiety, so remain calm to reassure them.

Remember, get your training started now ready for new year and next years festivities! If you need help with your anxious dog, simply drop us a line 🐕❤️

🎃🐾 Halloween is here, and while it's a spooky good time for us, it can be a bit ruff for our furry friends.

Here are some considerations to keep your dogs safe and happy this Halloween:

1. 🍬 Keep Sweets Out of Reach: Chocolate and many sweets are toxic to dogs. Make sure those treats are well out of paw's reach.

2. 🎭 Costume Cautions: If you dress up your pup, ensure the costume is comfortable and doesn't restrict their movement or breathing and they are comfortable being dressed up.

3. 🚀 Fireworks and Loud Noises: Halloween can bring loud noises and fireworks. Keep your dog in a quiet, safe place to reduce stress.

4. 🚪 Secure Frightening Decor: Dogs can get tangled or scared by decorations. Keep them pet-friendly or out of pups way.

5. 🐶 ID and Microchipping: Ensure your dog has proper identification in case they get spooked and run off.

6. 🎉 Trick or Treaters: Constant knocks at the door and weird costumes can be stressful for our dogs, ensure they’re safely locked away, and pop a sign up on your door to let trick or treaters know that your dog can become anxious in these situations.

Remember, safety and comfort first!

Happy Halloween! 🐕👻

25/10/2023

It is with great sadness that we must announce the passing of our mascot, Retired Military Working Dog Titch.

Titch spent 7 years in the British Army serving as one of the most highly successful High Assurance Search Dogs in Afghanistan. She has without a doubt enabled soldiers to return home safely that may not have done so otherwise. Since retiring and becoming our mascot, Titch enjoyed a peaceful and loving life at home with our Head Trainer and her former handler Jasmin.

Titch became one of the team trainers in her own right, helping to raise other pups and teaching many others the art of how to dog and become respectable members of society. She also taught many handlers a thing or two about their handling skills or lack of in some cases.

Titch will be sorely missed and will leave a big hole in our hearts. Her harness now sits empty and collar hung up for the last time. She now joins her other veteran brothers and sisters over the bridge, whom all deserve our respect for what they did and what the younger generations of working dogs still do.

May you rest in peace Titch.

‘At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them’

Brainwork = Happy dogs and owners!

Our dogs absolutely thrive from using their brains.

Thinking through problems and learning new things can help with more than you’d think.

Many breeds are bred to work or crossed with breeds that are and for these guys, mental stimulation is key (but it’s not limited to working breeds at all!). A couple walks a day is often not enough, so why not swap one of those walks with some brain games!

Giving your dog a job/hobby can help with more than just learning cool new things. Many unwanted behaviours come from a lack of outlet or lack of stimulation, so why not give them something cool to put all of that energy into, rather than what they choose to do with it!

Our personal favourites?
🐕 - Dog sports
🦮 - Scentwork
🐕‍🦺 - Tracking/Trailling
🐾 - Trick training or Obedience
🐶 - Cooprative play

Our Story

Armatus Risks Canine was started by ex military personnel with a passion for working with dogs.

We bring our professionalism and energy into an industry with the aim of being a name people associate with high standards and reliability. Our training team might seem young, but they are all ex Army, some being ex military working dog handlers themselves. Between the team we own 22 of our own working dogs and have over 40 years experience combined. Retired Military Working Dog Titch is our mascot after serving 6 years in the Army as a Search and Protection dog.

We are realistic in our approach to training and work in a relaxed atmosphere to get the best out of the people and dogs that train with us. Every dog and their handler is different, that's why each and every training session we run is tailored to them. Our courses are run throughout the year with competitive rates, discounts for veterans and previous students. We have contacts up and down the country so we have the ability to train at venues to give future dog handlers the best experience possible before doing the job.

So if you want to take on the life of a dog handler, or want somewhere to train, come and pull up a sandbag with us.
