These two! Even the hoover doesn't bother them. 🙈🤣

It must be the heat? All mine are at it! 🤭

This is a common occurrence in my birdroom but the odd egg laid is very rare. They just enjoy the fun and, as there are no nesting places, the hens don't move on to egg laying. 😉

This led me to thinking, I'm often asked about pairs and, in the main, most people ask for two boys due to the "hormone difficulties" or the worry of them pairing. I honestly think it's really unfortunate that there's so much negativity around female budgies. 😔🐦

In my experience, a pair of boys just love to sit and preen all day and do little else, a girl and a boy will interact all day long. The girls are so much more active, they provide hours of entertainment. Yes, they're a bit more bossy, yes you may see some pairing but all this is completely normal and doesn't mean you'll have hormone problems or eggs. Any difficulties experienced are usually due to odd numbers, for instance two boys and a girl. Even numbers are always best.

I have around 80 budgies, males and females together, I can count on one hand the amount of eggs that have been laid over the past years and they all live very happily together. 🤗

So, girls, in my experience, girls are more independent but they are easy to tame and, once bonded, are just as interactive and loving as boys. A lone female budgie will talk, too. I have customers who have girls who talk. I often wonder, maybe more boys talk than girls because most people, if they want a talker, choose a boy in the first place. Therefore, naturally more boys talk but is that because they're a boy or is it literally because more boys are given the opportunity? 🤔🐦

It's the age old question, why are budgies so fussy about food? Well, it's not due to their taste buds! Budgies only have about 300 taste buds, compared to a human's 9,000! 😮

Budgies fear unfamiliar things due to their natural evolutionary prey instincts. In the wild, being cautious of new objects, foods, sounds, or environments keeps them safe from predators. This instinctual fear is known as neophobia. All budgies are neophobic so, if your budgie hasn't been fed veg by the breeder, you have to be a bit crafty in introducing new foods! 😉🐦

Vegetables are crucial for budgies because they provide essential vitamins, minerals and fibre that a seed-based diet lacks. 25% of your budgie's diet should be attributed to veg.

There are three ways that seem to provide consistently positive results:

🥕 Choose a relatively sweet vegetable, carrot seems to be the best, chop it into tiny chunks, with a food processor if possible, and then mix 1 teaspoon into a small amount of your budgie's regular seed mix. Keep doing this daily. As your budgie forages in the seed mix, they'll come across the veg and, hopefully, realise it's nice! You can continue to add different veg as they acclimatise to it.

🌱 For whole leaves and sliced vegetables, use your budgie bath. Don't use an enclosed one if they don't like going in it, use a shallow bowl. Even if your budgie doesn't like to bath they don't seem to be able to resist anything wet! Pile fresh leaves, for example, Basil, Mint, Chard or sliced carrots into the shallow water and allow the veg to hang over the sides, too. Again, it may take a good few times of doing it. Nothing is quick with budgies but, eventually it should entice them.

😋 Also, budgies follow one another, if one's eating it, another will try it. I see that all the time when I take in budgies who have never eaten veg. Within a couple of weeks they've watched the others and they're straight in there! If you have tame budgies, show them that you like veg, sit them on your hand with the veg in it and then slowly pick up small amounts and eat it yourself with a happy tone, a smiley face and a yum yum! It might sound crazy but how many budgies fly to your plate the minute your own food comes out?! Eat healthy budgie food and Bob's your uncle! 😋

❗️Remember, you'll need to remove the fresh veg after 4 hours if not eaten, including the seed mix. Gone off veg can quickly grow harmful bacteria and mould, if eaten, it can cause severe illness.

💡You can keep the chopped veg in the fridge for up to three days or, you can freeze small portions in an ice cube container and defrost, a cube at a time, overnight in the fridge to feed the next day.

I also use the same tricks with whole veg that my budgie's are a bit wary of. For example, peppers are excellent for them but they tend to go watery in chop recipes so I cut one in half, leave the seeds in and stuff it with seed mix and leaves they love, like Basil. I can tell by their faces afterwards they've been eating the red pepper when they're nibbling the basil and eating the seed! 😉🤣

I try to cater for all my budgie's idiosyncressies, here's a few foods and the different things I do with them as well as making "chop". 😊

Has anyone else been worried about the heat today? It was 24 degrees here by 9 this morning and it's 34 now 😅.

I created some cool down fun for them but at the same time giving them some great veg to eat and warm water showers to help with cooling and moulting.

The cat fountain is, by far, my budgie's favourite out of the two showers and, for those of my budgies who don't like a bath, veg surfing in about 1 cm water always works! 😉🤣

They've now eaten most of the veg and I've cleared it away. I'm always mindful veg goes off quicker in this heat so a few hours max and then chuck what's left. 😊

The oil drip tray is a really simple way of capturing the water spillage, they're around £7 from a car parts website. My other tray, I saved from an old budgie cage. 😉

Have you ever wondered how your budgies are so alert, even when they're sleeping?

They can sleep with one eye open and half their brain awake to watch for predators! 😮

Budgies use a process called unihemispheric slow-wave sleep, where they shut one eye and rest half of their brain while the other eye stays open and the other half of the brain remains alert to watch for predators. How clever is that?! 🐦🤗🐦

I was thinking about Father's day and my Stanley immediately came to mind. Sadly, he passed away, but he was, by far, my best budgie daddy and a boy that will always have a very special place in my heart. Here he is with his chicks. 🥰

Gosh, time flies! All these beauts are now independent. 🥰

These are Constance and Benny's chicks, exhibition x pet type. Benny re-joined the flock yesterday. He's been an absolutely fantastic dad and it was time for him to catch up with Constance, who's also been an incredible mum. They can have a bit of peace now, these lot are hard work! 🤗

For any of you who've followed me for a long time, you'll remember back, I took my granddaughter to Nandos one Saturday for lunch and she talked me into coming back with a budgie! I named her Constance, to my granddaughters disgust 🤣, as it's my granddaughter's middle name. We couldn't leave Constance just sat in a cage, all alone, on the counter at the petshop. Who knew then what a wonderful addition she'd be. I just adore her and her chicks.🥰

I'm so chuffed with these, just beautiful inside and out. They're going to make wonderful additions to their new families very soon. 🤗
