Over the summer, people will often say to me, “Bet you’re loving this weather!” — but the truth is, hot weather can actually be a bit of a pain for us dog walkers.

The worry of fitting everyone in before it becomes too hot, rearranged rotas, shortened walks, pop-in visits, and cancellations all affect my working day and my income.

I know changes can be frustrating for owners too, but no amount of inconvenience is ever worth risking a dogs health.

It’s not just about forecast temperatures either (it can sometimes end up hotter than predicted), I also have to consider the conditions on the day — full sun, no breeze, and high humidity levels can all make walks unsafe for the group.

I walk a mix of breeds, ages, and fitness levels. Each dog will tolerate heat differently, so what is safe for one may not be safe for another and here in the UK our dogs simply aren't acclimatised.

Another consideration is the temperature inside the van. I have air conditioning, roof vents, crate fans, and the bulkhead removed - I do everything I can to help keep the dogs cool over the summer months, but on hot days vehicles can heat up very quickly once stationary or stuck in traffic.

You know yesterday when I mentioned we were due some good weather? Well, look at this! ☀️

As our forecasts are very changeable, I’ll play it by ear, but I wanted to remind everyone ahead of time of my warm weather policy. Your dogs safety and wellbeing come first, and I will never put any dog in my care at risk.

On warm days, I have a limited time frame to fit everyone in before it becomes too hot, so please be aware that if you don’t have a regular slot that day, or you are at home with your dog, your walk may be cancelled/rearranged.

Over the Summer months walks may need to start earlier so they can be completed before the hottest part of the day, shortened, and/or changed to pop in visits for those dogs home alone. Please let me know if this causes any problems.

I'll make a decision on timings the night before and contact you all individually.

Thank you all for your understanding — now go enjoy the bank holiday sunshine 🌞

You know one of those days when you really, really need cake?

I’d heard there was a cake shed (Tan Bakes) over the river and, seeing as I hadn’t been over there in ages, thought we'd make a detour on our lunch time walk.

Bad news for me - the cake cupboard was bare ☹️

Luckily they still had ice cream - including doggy ice cream for this lot 🐶

Hugo, Lincoln, Sasha and Denzil - patiently waiting for their share (well I couldn't leave them out, could I 💜)
