I don't just look after dogs!

This week I'm sitting the amazingly named Squiggles and Doodle, and as you can see I've had to brush up on my salad-making skills!

You might have seen posts regarding some local dogs becoming seriously ill after eating rat poison. This is scary and a reminder that it's so important to keep your eyes peeled when out walking to make sure your pooch doesn't eat anything they shouldn't.

If you suspect they've eaten something, don't wait for symptoms to appear, as treatment is often much more effective if started early.

Some common early signs include:
🚨Vomiting (sometimes with blood)
🚨Lethargy or unusual tiredness
🚨Loss of appetite
🚨Drooling
🚨Wobbliness or difficulty walking
🚨Tremors or seizures (with some poisons)
🚨Pale gums
🚨Rapid or laboured breathing

Some practical tips:
🐕Keep your dog on a lead, even if they usually have great recall
👃🏼Don't let them sniff, lick or eat anything they find on the ground
💧Take fresh water with you so they're less tempted to drink from puddles
👀Stay on well-used paths where you can keep a close eye on them
🚫Avoid areas where incidents have been reported if possible

Today I found myself looking at the photo of Gracie on my fridge.

Gracie was one of the very first dogs to join my dog walking family, and in February she very sadly passed away.

It's hard to put into words how much your dogs become part of my life. They aren't "just clients" who come for a walk - they become part of my routine, my memories, and hold a piece of my heart. I laugh at their funny little habits, worry when they're unwell, and miss them when they're gone.

Gracie was one of those special girls I'll never forget. I'll always be grateful that she was one of the dogs who helped my little business grow in those early days.

Beautiful Gracie, you'll always have a place on my fridge, and more importantly, a place in my heart ❤️🐾

The reality of a dog walker 🐶☀️

Hot weather sounds lovely until you are trying to keep dogs safe, comfortable and mentally stimulated without pushing them beyond what their bodies can handle.

People often think summer means easier days. In reality, it often means completely changing how the job looks.

Early morning walks become essential because pavements heat up quickly and there is a real danger of heatstroke.

Midday walks turn into garden visits instead, short enrichment sessions, sniff work, or simply letting dogs toilet safely and head back inside where it is cool.

Some walks get moved. Some get shortened. Some get cancelled completely. And that is not overreacting, it is responsible care.

Every decision comes down to the dog in front of you. Their age, breed, coat type, fitness level, temperament and how they cope individually with heat all matter.

A group that works perfectly in spring might not be safe to walk together in summer. Energy levels change, tolerance drops, and what looks fine on paper can feel very different in real conditions.

This is the part people do not always see. The constant adjusting, assessing and sometimes disappointing people because safety has to come first.

Because to be a dog walker you have to put a dog’s wellbeing above convenience, expectation and routine ☀️🐾

☀️ HOT WEATHER ALERT ☀️

With temperatures set to rise next week, the safety and wellbeing of the dogs in my care remains my top priority

During periods of hot weather, walks may be adjusted, shortened, or replaced with garden play, enrichment activities, and comfort visits where necessary. This helps prevent overheating, dehydration, and heatstroke. Heatstroke can develop quickly and is life-threatening. If your dog shows signs of heatstroke, move them to a cool area, offer water, and contact a vet immediately

🐾 Guidance for walking dogs in hot weather:
✅ Walk early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler
✅ Always carry fresh water and offer regular drinking breaks
✅ Stick to shaded routes wherever possible
✅ Watch for signs of overheating such as excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or difficulty breathing
✅ Consider shorter walks and more indoor enrichment on very hot days
❌ Don't walk dogs during the hottest part of the day (typically 11am–4pm)
❌ NEVER leave dogs in cars, even for a few minutes
❌ If you can't comfortably hold the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds, it's too hot for your dog's paws

History time!
